Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER (December 2017)

A stunning novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts—Year One is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magick, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives…

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

The thing I love the most about Nora Roberts as an author is she changes with the times. This book was so good, not only did I actually tear up a few times while listening to it, I was really sad when it was over. Then I realized the next book isn't coming out until November 2018, which made me even sadder. Her storytelling is so complete that you can get a total picture in your head of what is going on. I am spoiled from reading her work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who not only loves Nora Roberts, but loves fantasy/scifi type genres.

This is an excellent read/listen. I was just disappointed in the ending and hoping there is a sequel on the way.

Did Nora Roberts really “predict” a version of what happened with the recent pandemic!? Loved the story. Had to get the other 2 books!! Huge fan of scifi and romance and strong female leads <3

Good story that sets up for more. The story of normal word transitioning in a world of magic and chaos was well done. Look forward to sequel as still seems much to be told.

The book felt overdone, too many adjectives. I'll skip the series.

Started out well, with excellent narration. Turned into anti-Christian, pro-pagan drivel.

All I can say is wow! This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I love these types of apocalypse stories, and throw in the special magic skills then you suddenly have a new level of intrigue. The interaction of dark versus light forces adds a chilling element to this really brilliant novel.

I was really excited to listen to this, it sounded interesting but the characters were all too similar and hard to tell apart. Couldn’t really follow what was going on/ most of it seemed to be irrelevant dialogue or just random fighting scenes with people you don’t remember or can’t put a face to. Barely made it through but feel like the bones of the story were good, the writing was just bad.

Not my cup of tea, but it was ok.

Not what I’d expected or hoped. Having now been living through an actual pandemic, the direction this took with the magical elements was rather a turn off.

This was an absolute page turner. Considering the state the world is in right now Nora Roberts seems like a psychic. It’s hard not to really feel like you know her characters. Almost as if they are real flesh and blood. If you want to read about a pandemic with Nora’s special spin of supernatural this book was written for you.

I gave a chance on this book and my god it been one of the best books I've listened too. The story has given me goosebump throughout the story... just incredible story cant wait for the second one. The narrator does an amazing job. Worth every cent and time to listen or to read.

The plot was interesting for both me and my husband while we listened on a road trip. The writing is awkward at times, and sometimes a little overwrought, but it was a pleasant listen. I am continuing on with the next book, so the story is keeping me interested.

This book, though good, left me wanting. There was not enough explanations, details and too much time spent on certain characters. It seems to me this might be a set up for a second book but if one is not coming, don’t waste your time listening to this.

This was the first Nora Roberts book I’ve hated. I didn’t even finish listening to it, and did not regret removing it from my list.

Because it’s Nora Roberts, it’s very well written and easy to read/listen. But, exactly because it’s NR, I have a feeling of expecting more. And the story resembles to the bibble. So, I hope more surprisingly good writing to the sequel!
