I found the plot & characters to be convoluted and hard to follow. The narrator just didn’t convey the story in a manner that engaged the reader.

A convoluted and well written stroryline that kept me guessing. Chapter endings left me wanting to get to the next. The reader gave convincing characters through changing his voice to suit. Even the women. A good mystery. The style of the book gives clear indication of the attitudes of the era in which the story is set. Shows how far we have progressed in society.

Love stories written by Mary Roberts Rinehart. This is a fun one that’s a bit convoluted but delightfully enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this time book and the narrator. The book was was told by the main character who was male and narrated by a male as if he were talking to us. I liked that about the book.

I enjoyed every bit! There was great, clean humor , too.

Interesting characters but the main storyline is nothing special.

This was a well constructed tale told by a dynamic storyteller.

This book kept me absolutely enthralled. It was written in a by gone era, it's true, but anyone who reads Charles Dickens or Jane Austen, Agatha Christie or Ernest Hemingway etc would be able to get to grips with it. We've moved on from some of the more ignorant outlooks. But the story was great, with lots of twists and turns. The villain was unexpected and the "missing Aunt Jane" added great fun. I though the narrator was excellent, too.

Took me a little while to get into the story, but once I did I really liked it. Yes, there are inappropriate statements from back in the day, so you have to be willing to get past the ignorance of our past. That aside, the story kept my attention and I really appreciated the narrator’s voices for each character. The best free read I’ve heard to date.

The story is engaging, though it does have racist and sexist parts which always took me out of the story and made me wince and/or pissed me off. The narrator does a great job with the pace, diction, and fun voices for different characters. A really great job.

This was a thrilling story with many mysteries, most connected with the men who were involved in corruption in the local and state government. Mr. Knox the lawyer gets involved when a pretty young woman asks him to look for her father who had gone missing. The more he gets involved in the search, the more mysterious things become. But as well, the more he begins to love the young lady, even though she is wearing a huge diamond engagement ring. So much mystery happens each night , no matter if an empty house or a family home, with intruders and injuries. And still, the story remains somewhat lighthearted as the lawyer tries to be detective. And in spite of the inept attempts, the truth is eventually detected and all the mysteries worked out. I am looking forward to reading more of Mary Roberts Rinehart books. I thought the reader was brilliant! He really brought the story to life as he read each character in different voices.
