This story begins at an observatory in England where the narrator witnesses explosions on Mars. This event is followed by what is thought to be a meteor landing not far from the observatory. Once the narrator travels to the spot of the meteor landing he discovers it is actually a cylinder and the cylinder contains Martians. The story chronicles the Martian attacks throughout many parts of England, even devastating London and the narrator escapes with many chilling and near death adventures

Great narrator to accompany a book that far outperforms its movie.

Profile Avatar Nathalia T Jun 2017

The book was a great disappointment. Half the scenes were 100% unnecessary, the ending was lame, etc. BUT the voice actor (narrator) was great.

Goodddddd!!!!

Profile Avatar Bob Roman Feb 2016

I never read it before and can say the book is better than the movie(s)!

Profile Avatar John Dodd Aug 2015

Good book, it's really old now but it is still good. It is told almost like a bedtime story or tall tale.

Profile Avatar David P. Dec 2018

Listening to this classic story was constantly ruined by the misspoken words from the American narrator. Time and again I had to think twice about what he'd just said only to realise the word he actually meant. e.g. navies (as in road building navies) being pronounced as though they were sea based ships navies !? Constantly irritated by this throughout this story.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2018

a good story and easy to listen to narrator.

Profile Avatar Kilian F T Jul 2016

Great narrator and good story! Definitely better that the movie

Profile Avatar Jacqueline Amdal Jul 2014

I read this year's ago then saw the movie it was fun having it read to me thus time Great Read

I managed 50 minutes of listening to an American reading a Classic British novel with no apparent research into the pronunciation of English place names. Shame on you Librivox for not checking such a basic requirements. I can only assume that some of the 'glowing' reviews were not from readers familiar with our place names.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

The narrator is American having no knowledge of English pronunciation. A lot of the town names were pronounced wrongly. He didn’t read ahead so finished sentences with his tone then read the end of the sentence as if he was starting a new one. Very poor!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

Beginnings of sentences clipped and dreadful pronunciation of locations.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2020

Enjoyed book. Movie and TV series adaptations use Welles’s story very well. I like the ending where he calls out preparedness for the future. We don’t think of that often in real life as I look on this book in the midst of covid19

Profile Avatar D M. Feb 2020

Pronunciation by the narrator is appalling. Clearly no research done. Really frustrating to listen to.

Profile Avatar Roland Keys Jan 2020

A story that I am very familiar with, living close to the area it is set in. It was read well but the narrator struggle with the english prenounciation of place names

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2019

It is highly frustrating if not painful to have a reader of a classic novel set in the uk who does not know the correct pronouciation of the river that runs through the capital city. Their chewing of other place names was equally galling

I'm so glad that I got to listen to this book again. I remember listening to this on cassette tape with my class in primary school, but I literally was too young to be able to appreciate the story. Loved it this time around, though the narrator could have done a better job with place names...

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2019

The book of course was superb the narrator good but some pronunciations of English and Scottish villages plus other mispronunciations were so obviously narrated by an American. I found the speed of speech slow so put it up a notch which made for a better experience.

Phenomenal read

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2018

This is the only way to read a thriller! Great narratives and the read threw life into the words of the classic,

Profile Avatar Maya B. May 2018

Narration made this book amazing. Really enjoyed the listen.

Profile Avatar Rondavooo Mar 2025

This book is brilliant. I couldn’t get over what a good understanding of science there was, even as far back as 1895. I was engrossed from the beginning to the end. The narrator confused and distracted my concentration. His voice was absolutely perfect, as was his reading style. I was put off by his word pronunciation. He said some things like he’d never heard them spoken aloud. Some that stuck out for me were: Lao- ing for lowing cows, slay-in for slain, and bait for a horse’s bit. There were several more. I have no idea if this was a dialectical thing, or something else. I wish I could have given him more stars because his voice is very good.

For the date is was written and keeping that in mind, it was a fantastic book. I’ve seen all the movies related to this book but never read the original. So fascinating and so forward thinking. Great book.

Great H. G. Well’s adventure sci-go story. Is Michael Scott, the narrator, AI? So many words mispronounced, then he would occasionally get one right. I found myself listening for these little successes, and cheering him on (yay, he got it right!) as mankind battled the Martians for survival!

Profile Avatar suak Jan 2024

A classic sci-fi well narrated. The only aspect that affected my enjoyment was the atrocious pronunciation of the British place names and words. This was a shame as it could possibly have been easily recruited it was distracting enough for me to stop listening halfway through.

Profile Avatar Heather B. Jan 2024

The narrator sounds like he’s advertising an action film. Think “coming to a cinema near you”. There’s no change in tone or mood. And for the love of God, if people are being paid to read English place names out loud, please can they consult a Brit. Think about how annoying it would be to hear Arkansas pronounced as R-can-sus and Hawaii pronounced as Ha-way like it was normal multiple times. I wanted to persist and actually think about the content of the book, but it’s really hard to listen to with this narrator.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2023

It was a good experience

Profile Avatar Alexina K. Aug 2023

Great story

Profile Avatar Sally G. Jun 2023

Truly the first Sci-fi book written in 1897. It opened the world we now enjoy. Interesting to see how the author viewed his world. I enjoyed overall.

Profile Avatar Smileykat Mar 2023

Good book…I can see why it stands the test of time.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2023

Crazy that this was imagined in 1880 but still read everywhere

Profile Avatar Shane S. Feb 2023

I couldn't get into this book because of the narrator. He was very monotone. He reminded me of Kin'emon from One Piece, lol.

Profile Avatar Luke M. Feb 2023

The narrator is good and not distracting. The story is very good science fiction, where easy-to-understand science is used as plot points in a satisfying way. The book is scary, and will leave you wondering about the fate of humankind. I love it!

Profile Avatar Dane U. Oct 2022

So cool to finally hear the original!

Profile Avatar Ya Oct 2022

From the Radio broadcast that spread terror to a unwitting population, to the excellent book, to this excellent audiobook , this story always is fun.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

Boring story

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2022

Sadly the narrator spoiled the excellent story for me, as he could not properly pronounce some of the English names, being American! He pronounced the river Thames as Tames instead of Tems and some of the town names he pronounced made me cringe. A British narrator would have made a big difference to my enjoyment.

Profile Avatar Michael S. Apr 2022

Most enjoyable totally recommend this

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2022

Book was fine. The narration was spoiled by the mis pronounciation of many of the English place names. It was so bad it made the book painful to listen to.

Profile Avatar Chris Feb 2022

The details

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2021

I found the narrator too slow and emotionless for my taste

Profile Avatar Steven Dec 2021

Well read.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2021

great book to listern to

Profile Avatar Anonymous Dec 2021

The American narration of an English story with very poor place name pronunciation and inconsistent intonation spoiled the experience for me although I did see it through to the end.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2021

a great listen. This is the template for all future aliens from space fiction. amazing how things haven't changed since the late 1800s.

Profile Avatar Peter B. Jul 2021

Excellent to hear the original story. The pronouncing of the English place names is amusing. Woking is Woke not Wok. Thames is Tems not Tames. And many others. Good though, very entertaining.

Profile Avatar Laura K. Jun 2021

I really couldn’t get much further than the first chapter due to the narrator who’s style would be more suited to reading a traffic report.

Profile Avatar Walter McCartney May 2021

A very enjoyable classic.

Profile Avatar Peter S. Apr 2021

A classic story that is utterly ruined by a bad narrator. One would think that the narrator would bother to familiarise himself with the pronunciation of the place names. Distractingly bad.

Profile Avatar Greg S. Feb 2021

Good book and it brings a lot of light to scenes from the movie

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2020

Great narration.loved the story

Profile Avatar Marista McWhorter Aug 2020

A classic sci-fi novel that is told from the first person. The narrator did an awesome job, taking into account the time in which this story was written, I think he captured the somewhat dryness that goes along with the period.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2020

A classic English book in an American accent? Seriously? Also the sound quality is appalling. Bad enough that I gave up listening to it after 20 minutes of agony.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

it was good thank you I enjoy listening to book this way. Its ok since now I can hear what is happoning sorry its Im not able to kslk to enyone

Profile Avatar Shane S. Jun 2020

Why wouldn’t want to listen to a great alien book lol

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2020

This was a very engaging book. Such vivid descriptions. I really felt needed in the tale. The narrator is outstanding!!

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

Good to read the original again instead of “films with there own interpretation “

Profile Avatar Cornelius Thomas Apr 2020

I really like the narrator he really gets you into the story

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2020

watch the movie

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2019

First audiobook I've ever listened to and I have to say I really enjoyed it, I walk a lot and it was a great companion for me, as a couple of people mentioned, the narrator had a different take on some pronunciations, but I was intrigued and amused (in a nice way) I will definitely try some other audiobooks to take along on my walks.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2019

This was a great book, very interesting and exciting. A enjoyable experience!

Profile Avatar Greg Q May 2018

was not what I expected, disappointed

Profile Avatar Elliot Bliss Oct 2015
