Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She’s used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, she’d be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remains of her world.

Aster lives in the lowdeck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations, Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way, the ship’s leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer, Aster learns there may be a way to improve her lot—if she’s willing to sow the seeds of civil war.

This is such a meaningful, fulfilling, work full of beautiful sounds, colors, , smells, and tastes. Aster has to be the most interesting protagonist I have every read. Every character was so beautifully complex and well written. This is the absolute best generation space ship novel I have ever read/ listen. This is one of the best sff novels I have ever experienced. What an amazing novel!

Amazing and incredible world building, through storytellers not often heard or acknowledged.

I love this book on all levels. The characters are full, multi-faceted and enduring and made real by the brilliant narrator. I laughed and cried in equal measure. Aster makes me want to be better and less compromising whilst Giselle reminds me to accept and revel in who I am even if that being is flawed and often unacceptable. I cannot wait to read more by River Soloman who has weaved such a world full of darkness, beauty, pain, hope, intelligence and humour together. Cannot recommend highly enough.
