Grace Martindale has known more than her share of hardship. After her parents died, raising her two younger sisters became her responsibility. A hasty marriage to a minister who is heading to the untamed West seemed like an opportunity for a fresh start, but a cholera outbreak along the wagon trail has left Grace a widow in a very precarious position. Having learned natural remedies and midwifery from her mother, Grace seeks an opportunity to use her skills for the benefit of others. So when she and her sisters arrive at the Whitman mission in 'Oregon Country,' she decides to stay rather than push on.

Such an amazing book! Started out slow but got very good. The author portrayed the realness of Christianity very well and the narrator was very good at showing the different characters!

I enjoyed the story, even through their hardships. The author writes a very engaging story that really pushes you to recognize that God is there through it all, but we also need to get beyond ourselves. Narrator did a superb job. Great pace and tone.

In some instances this story was right on and in some I was on the verge of offended. I tolerated the lead character because of her ignorance and naïveté and loved the poor old trapper with more patience then I the reader to gently wake her up. He was the one I wept for as there need to be more people like him.
