Summary
Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred

One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

This classic describes coming of age in the Deep South amidst serious life events, the awareness raised by being the children of Atticus, a local attorney. Both children became aware of the damage done by severe racial prejudice and joined their father in the courageous but tragic counter cultural activities, raising awareness of the pain and suffering of African Americans, and the bravery required to be a minority in the Deep South. Loved this book and have listened several times.

Excellent book. I was on the edge of my seat, so I actually sped up the narrator's voice. This is an American classic that should never be taken off the shelves no matter what your view is, because we cannot erase history. How will we ever learn if we don't learn from our mistakes. This was truly an amazing book. The narrator for this audiobook was the best I've ever heard yet!

I love the language and descriptions in this book. It really makes you think about the time period. The message was deep and too true. I found myself contemplating the human heart long after finishing this book. The narrator was great. She spoke so smoothly that it was easy to get lost in the story.

One of my favorite books. If you were assigned this book in school and dreaded it, I implore you to try reading it again, if not listen to this recording. It reminds me why Atticus Finch is one of literature's most beloved characters. I honestly fell in love all over again. The writing is smart, lush, and vivid. Touching, witty, and heartbreaking. Pair this with Sissy Spacek's wonderful performance, and you've got a masterpiece. Without making goofy cartoon voices, Sissy differentiates all of the characters using simple changes in pitch and delivery. When you're listening, you almost forget it's just one woman speaking. The recording is 12 hours long, but I found it went by extremely fast. Thoroughly enjoyable. I think I may make this a yearly listen so I can enjoy it again.

One of the best books ever written. I had forgotten what a great book it is. Engaging, engrossing, emotive, (I cried three times and I never cry), outstanding use of language. And there can be no better narrator than Sissy Spacek (so?). Great southern accent and use of voices for each character. You will glad you revisited this old friend.

I remember this being required reading back in grade school. Nothing like the exquisite narrative that Sissy Spacek does in her MASTERFUL narration that bring ;Jean Louise Finch (Scout) , Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) , Atticus Finch. Calpurnia., Charles Baker Harris (Dill), Arthur Radley (Boo) , Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell to life with this timeless classic. A MUST!

I'm an 8th grader and we got assigned to read this book. It was so cool that they had a southern accent reading the book because it felt like she knew the story and it really brought you more into the book. This book was amazing and I wasn't expecting it to be this good. This is my new favorite book!

Profile Avatar

I am getting to know southern Mississippi and just spent two months there. The language and issues of the book are still pertinent, the prejudice isn't as overt but is engrained in Southern culture and the attitudes of the white population towards the blacks. It really was dangerous for blacks to cross whites, and it still isn't a fair world for the non-white population. Sissy Spacek is gifted as an interpreter of Scout's world, but the writing is amazing, rich and beautiful, even when the story is ugly, it is real. I will have to read Lee Harper's new release. I didn't find the story slow, but then, the South is slow, and I am not accustomed to the speed of television!

Profile Avatar
Jessica Peterson

Sissy Spacek did an amazing job narrating. Gave me a greater appreciation for the book!

Profile Avatar

Not at all what I was expecting. I thought it was a courtroom drama. I think it would have been a rather boring read, but Sissy Spacek really brought it to life.

Profile Avatar

Since we m ow this book is amazing, I will just comment on the narrator of the audio. She was good and easy to listen too for hours on end.

Profile Avatar

Profile Avatar
Christa Blevins

I love the narrator reading. She does great! I just find the book a little offensive. If you are sensitive to the "N" word then I would not recommend this book. But remember it's setting is when stuff like that was an okay word to say. But it is a good and interesting book.

Profile Avatar

I had never read this in my younger years, but I had seen the movie. Loved it! I think Sissy Spacek brought Scout and the story to life as I listened. Excellent book and narrator!

Profile Avatar

I suppose this book appealed to the masses in 1960, the controversial subject matter. However I found the ignorance and naiveness of some of the characters amusing. I still had a very difficult time getting through the book I found it to be boring and slow for today's reading. Sissy Spacek did a great job bringing out that simple southern charm.

As with most, I read this book in school and have seen the movie several times. But Ms Spacek really brings it to life. Her southern accent draws you into the characters, using just the right amount of emotion. I've recommended this version to everyone ... it is a must listen!

There has been so much written about this book that anything I could add would be redundant. I'll just say that: a) I can't believe it took me this long to finally read it, and b) I am glad that I finally did.

After reading pillar of the earth(world worst book) I needed to go back to fundamentals to remember there are still good writers out there in this world. To Kill a Mockingbird helps me remember how there are writers that make every word count, that they do not search for sheer volume. Harper Lee's work is a masterpiece, a heartbreaking masterpiece. My only regret is she never wrote another book. It remains the best book I ever read.

I read this book once in high school, but I must have been lacking the interest to remember it, because listening to it was like the first time I had ever heard it. Sissy Spacek was fantastic, I wish ALL books were performed by trained actors, she was really excellent. This book was an amazing journey through the law of the south, as well as the Finch family. I now see why this book is cherished so much. Great audio book, rent it!

What a classic. I am a big reader and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to enjoy this great book. I am constantly recalling other books, movies, and TV shows that reference this book through its characters or circumstances. Now I get it. Sissy Spacek is perfect as the reader. Her East Texas twang brings Scout to life as no other person could.

According to my records I read this book in 1961 and I thought it was great. When I saw the book on SAB I almost by passed it but realized I did not remember much about the book. I am happy I chose to listen to it as Sissy Spacek did a suberp job in reading this story. It almost seemed like a new story to me as I had forgotten most of it and I think that society has changed a lot since the day this book was written. My perspective of the story was a lot different than in 1961. Listening to this book makes me want to go back and reread some more classics. If you chose this book you will not be disappointed.

I'm not going to add much that the other reviewers haven't already said. I read this book many years ago, and have seen the movie more times than I can remember. This audio version was wonderful. Sissy Spacek is the perfect narrator with her soft Southern accent, and I could always tell which character was speaking just by her intonations. I did have to remind myself that the story is set in the 1930's as some of the language is uncomfortable by today's standards. But the story is powerful, and it is impossible to not be affected by it.

Profile Avatar

I've loved the movie since the first time I saw it many years ago. I think I love the book even more, without losing any respect for the movie, which is quite true to the book. There are many passages in the book that are not even touched upon in the movie. Sissy Spacek is PERFECT for this novel.

Even though I had read Harper Lee's classic years ago, I was captivated by her tremendous skill as an author and by Spacek's delilghtful narration. To Kill a Mockingbird is the epitome of a perfect novel: one which successfully captures each moment on paper, has believable characters and a fascinating plot. Now that I have finished it, I don't have to carry my CD player from room to room anymore.

This is definitely a classic; one of the best books of all time. When I read this book in high school, I enjoyed it but I am sure didn't appreciate all of the deeper undertones. Atticus Finch was surely a living saint and someone I would want as a close friend or relative. I could listen and read it again! Absolutely endearing to the heart!

this book is a classic and well deserves to be. it covers quite a few important issues without the reader being particularly aware of this. it is an excellent book for school english classes. as well the story is told by a young girl with whom it is easy to identify. It is beautifully read by a person with an appropriate southern accent. All of the strong emotions felt by the characters arecleverly underplayed, an amazing story to be analyzed and studied. i give it 5 stars. I loved listening to this audiotape.

I never read the book during my school years and am extremely glad I took this opportunity to understand why it is considered a classic. Sissy Spacek did a most enthralling job of portraying the storyline with such passion that I felt I knew each of the cast intimately. I enjoyed it immensely!

... everyone is nuts about this novel. I never had the opportunity to read this masterpiece, so I decided to listen to it. Sissy Spacek's performance is dead-on beautiful, her voice giving life to Scout's own & adding a gorgeous Southern rhythm to the story-telling. Sometimes, I couldn't get out my car when I arrived at my destination, because I didn't want to stop listening. Interestingly, I didn't see the story as described above: about a lawyer defending a black man. Instead, I saw it as a compelling coming-of-age story, with issues of racism, bigotry & class differences seen through a child's eyes. It is a book to never be forgotten, and to be re-read (either with eyes or ears) more than once in a lifetime.

Profile Avatar

A fantastic reading of one of the very best American novels. Sissy Spacek gives a phenomenal performance. Her pacing and Southern renditions are perfect. Harper Lee's wonderfully powerful and poetic story read so well makes for one of my favorites audio-books. It doesn't get much better...

I thoroughly enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird and have now listened to it at least 5 times on my long commute. I purchased the CD -- it's a keeper -- and the book as well. Sissy Spacek's narration is wonderful. Although I had seen and loved the film as a teenager, I had never read the book. Now, having read the book and listened to Sissy Spacek's reading of it, I feel that the film, great as it was, missed a lot. This book ranks as my #1 all time favorite (and I have read a LOT of books!)

Stumbling through academics in the sciences I missed the fine arts, literature, and the like. In my retirement, I'm trying to catch up. My recent reading of THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN was such a joy. I thought it couldn't be topped. THE KILLING OF A MOCKING BIRD tops it. Sissy Spacek does a wonderful job and the lessons taught may be too difficult for the younger mind. I'm not sure I could have enjoyed it as much when younger. One reviewer indicated they could read it again for the first time. I understand what they meant. The second reading is never as good as the first. I'm glad I waited. It was a joy.

I haven't read this book since I was a kid. I don't think I appreciated the wonderful southern language, humor, and pace as much as I did with this go around. Sissy Spacek does a wonderful narration. You must treat yourself to this book. Sissy Spacek's narration was incredible. Her characterizations were subtle, but so stylized I always knew who was "speaking."
