Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The unapologetic, laugh-your-ass-off military memoir both vets and civilians have been waiting for, from a five-tour Army Ranger turned YouTube phenomenon and zealous advocate for veterans

Members of the military’s special operations branches share a closely guarded secret: They love their jobs. They relish the opportunity to fight. They are thankful for it, even, and hopeful that maybe, possibly, they’ll also get to kill a bunch of bad guys while they’re at it. You don’t necessarily need to thank them for their service—the pleasure is all theirs.

In this hilarious and personal memoir, readers ride shotgun alongside former Army Ranger and private military contractor and current social media phenomenon Mat Best, into the action and its aftermath, both abroad and at home. From surviving a skin infection in the swampy armpit of America (aka Columbus, Georgia) to kicking down doors on the outskirts of Ramadi, from blowing up a truck full of enemy combatants to witnessing the effects of a suicide bombing right in front of your face, Thank You for My Service gives readers who love America and love the good guys fresh insight into what it’s really like inside the minds of the men and women on the front lines.

It’s also a sobering yet steadying glimpse at life for veterans after the fighting stops, when the enemy becomes self-doubt or despair and you begin to wonder why anyone should be thanking you for anything, least of all your service. How do you keep going when something you love turns you into somebody you hate? For veterans and their friends and families, Thank You for My Service will offer comfort, in the form of a million laughs, and counsel, as a blueprint for what to do after the war ends and the real fight begins.

And for civilians, this is the insider account of military life you won’t find anywhere else, told with equal amounts of heart and balls. It’s Deadpool meets Captain America, except one went to business school and one went to therapy, and it’s anyone’s guess which is which.

Absolutely awesome! I've read quite a few autobiographies of military personnel and biographies about others. This one is truly on of the best (no pun intended) I've ever read. I've followed Mat for a few years now and had been waiting a while for this book, and by no means was I disappointed. If you're looking for a serious and only motivational autobiography, this is not that. You better have a sense of humor if you decide to open. The awesome thing is though it is hilarious it is also incredibly motivational. Has become truly one of my favorites.

Great book. If you're a fan of Mat and don't have a thin skin (i.e. reviews that whine about language), this is the book for you.

The narration was good but this book was not for me - it had really excessive language and it seemed self-indulgent. I think this book is meant to be more of a humorous riff from a young man's perspective, and was different than what I was hoping and expected.

I thought this was great book. Brought a view of really what it is like down range. Loved it

I liked it, but a bit overboard on his self-indulgence for his opinion of himself as a womanizer. As a veteran, I did really appreciate the view on civilians and their misguided understanding of what being a veteran is. I also appreciate his sense of patriotism and dedication to service. Every time a non-veteran thanks me for my service I want to slap them. Not a day goes by that I don't miss what I did in the military.

This book is narrated like Deadpool was a real veteran. Amazing book, and it gives new light to what service members actually go through so that hopefully, civilians will understand a little better. If you do not like vulgar language and actions, not the book for you.

I am whining about the language. Funny book, funnier if language was better, as shown by some of his analogies. Very little regard for women, though I didn't finish it , yet, and he might be growing up. I understand the necessity of shock value in war but shock value in bathroom humor and sexuality is old, over done, not creative and adds nothing to the book. Mat, personality isn't everything - finding common ground, helping people to understand your values, showing how our society could be better - that is value. Keep trying.

I have always enjoyed Matt “2nd” Best in all his endeavors and this one doesn’t disappoint. I love his open in your face humor, this is just how military veterans talk to each other and tell our stories. Recommend to anyone!

This is literally the best book I have ever listened to! So funny, so inspiring and so uplifting. Being a veteran it's so fun to listen to others accounts of their deployments and what their service was like as compared to my own. Thank you for your service!
