Summary
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore.

His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

Strongly recommendation to read book and I wasn't disappointed at all. I thought I knew and understood how it would end, but I was in no way prepared.

The novel itself was ok. It felt like an exploration of a “what if” prompt by describing different aspects of the “special meat” concepts with a loose narrative. Joseph Balderrama blew me away with his narration though. He was the perfect amount of cynical and dark in his tone.

I didn't like the ending that much, it felt very out of character for Marcos to be honest. Nevertheless, I really loved the plot and concept of this book. It made me stretch my imagination in a way that has never been stretched before. I wouldn't mind hearing another book from this author.

I was on the edge of my seat! The story was not at all what I was expecting. I walked away with several great conversational pieces at the end. I recommend it to everyone who can stomach it.

This book was vivid, visceral, vicious and violent. It shows the depth of human depravity and apathy by how they justify the predatory pleasure of cannibalism. The carnage and propaganda combine to be profitable at the cost of humanity. It's scary and realistic.

Narration was good, ending was not what I expected, in a bad way.

This was a very quick and enjoyable read!

This book was incredible, I was hooked from the start. I love psychological horror so much and this book left me hungry for more. The only reason it doesen’t get a 5 star is because of the animal cruelty.

Interesting read but not for me

Best book I have read in a long time. The narrative was straight out of the most horrific horror, yet understandable. The crude logic made it almost feel like a naughty read and the twist was a tornado. Brilliant writing and following the author.

I really enjoyed the book and the world building. Marco was a complex and deeply flawed character. I would read/ listen to it again to more closely understand his character and motivations. I am interested in what happened after the book, which is the telltale sign of a good book!

Wow, just wow! So much can be said about this one, a glimpse into the fragility of our so-called civilized society, while it begs the question, can we even call ourselves civilized when our treatment of other species is nothing short of barbaric! 10/10

So amazing!

Bazterrica amazed me with this. Almost had undertones of Hemingway in the sense of utilizing the iceberg method in this writing. The ending made me audibly gasp! What a dystopia of a world.

I absolutely loved this premise‐ the author did an amazing job worldbuilding. Horribly realistic :|

Interesting concept but was hoping for some more excitement and action.

An amazing book, must read! Mind altering and makes you think in a whole new way! Wish there was a second part though!

Anticlimactic, and had all the right parts to make something great, but was ultimately disappointing.
