Unabridged Audiobook
Meh.... it was a hard book to follow. I kept going back and forth, rereading. From what I gathered, this book is about Esi, a free-spirited Nigerian-Ghanaian girl. What a fiesta combo, right. Anywho, Esi is growing up during the 1960s in the postcolonial Ghana when she starts to doubt the double standards of the patriarchal society, the social norms, and unrealistic expectations placed on women. Esi, the gatekeeper of her family, secrets, from her father's cheating to her sister's eventful sex life. Upon seeing how she is punished and embarrassed at her own sexuality and exploration, she then comes to realize how men and women sexuality is viewed and deemed negatively. She can't fathom why men and women secrets bear different consequences. But after she is humiliated and punished for her own sexual exploration, Esi begins to question why women's secrets and men's secrets bear different consequences. This experience(s) sends her on a journey.... Upon womanhood, she struggles with her own dreams and beliefs against how she was raised and society's double standards. Even under the fragile political climate, she is able to find herself, her power, her purpose. #Book12of2024 #Bookworm #Whatsnext
The story was beautiful and heart-wrenching. I thought the author did a wonderful job adjusting the writing style to fit the mentality of the girl/woman as she aged and how her understanding of situations developed over time. The narrator had a gorgeous voice and had a cadence that portrayed the emotions and story well.
