Summary
From Martin Clark--praised by Entertainment Weekly as 'our best legal-thriller writer'--comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him. Kevin Moore, once a high-flying Virginia attorney, hits rock bottom after an inexplicably tumultuous summer leaves him disbarred and separated from his wife. Short on cash and looking for work, he lands in the middle of nowhere with a job at SUBstitution, the world's saddest sandwich shop. His closest confidants: a rambunctious rescue puppy and the twenty-year-old computer whiz manning the restaurant counter beside him. He's determined to set his life right again, but the troubles keep coming. And when a bizarre, mysterious stranger wanders into the shop armed with a threatening 'invitation' to join a multimillion-dollar scam, Kevin will need every bit of his legal savvy just to stay out of prison. A remarkable tour of the law's tricks and hidden trapdoors, The Substitution Order is both wise and ingenious, a wildly entertaining novel that will keep you guessing--and rooting for its tenacious hero--until the very last page.

I really enjoyed this book—kind of slice of life interwoven with a good believable plot. Held my attention to the end. Narrator was excellent.

Wow, I cannot believe how well the author put this novel together. The excellent narrator made the story even better.

I don't usually give 5 stars, but as a retired attorney I was impressed with the story and accuracy of the legal system's description. The story could have been edited some...parts were a little string out, but I enjoyed the plot and narrator immensely. great ending, didn't see that coming.

A really interesting plot with interesting characters - I particularly liked the inclusion of "Nelson." I enjoy criminal procedurals when written by authors who have been in the legal system (as Martin Clark has). This story had a lot going on outside the legalities as well which added to its interest. Well-drawn central character and a clever ending. The narrator did a great job of all voices.

Really enjoyed both the book and the narration. Pretty slow build up with a LOT of twists, then a VERY fast finish that you could anticipate but could not figure out exactly how it would occur-not being a lawyer.

Excellent story line, makes you want to hear just a few more minutes before pausing. Different narrators ensure the characters are easily identified. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to every minute.

Couldn’t get into it at all. The Author’s intro was too preachy and insulting to any thoughtful reader. Narrator was very difficult to follow and the story just reminded me of a Lord of the Rings episode.

I couldn’t read this book fast enough! A thoroughly enjoyable read, complete with legal twists and turns, I was hopelessly rooting for the “bad” guy! The ending did not disappoint.
