If you could make one simple choice that would change your life forever, would you?

Erin is a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough, Mark a handsome investment banker with big plans. Passionately in love, they embark on a dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, where they enjoy the sun, the sand, and each other. Then, while scuba diving in the crystal blue sea, they find something in the water. . . .

Could the life of your dreams be the stuff of nightmares?

Suddenly the newlyweds must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. After all, if no one else knows, who would be hurt? Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. . . .

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?

Wonder no longer. Catherine Steadman’s enthralling voice shines throughout this spellbinding debut novel. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we’re tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves.

Advance praise for Something in the Water

“With unreliable characters, wry voices, exquisite pacing, and a twisting plot, [Catherine] Steadman potently draws upon her acting chops. . . . A darkly glittering gem of a thriller from a new writer to watch.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Captivating . . . daring . . . The threats and increasingly bad decisions accelerate with Bourne-like velocity. . . . Steadman [is] a newcomer worth watching.”—Publishers Weekly

“An unbearably tense debut with a knockout premise, Something in the Water had me hooked from the very first sentence. Thrilling and thought-provoking, it’s the perfect beach read. I devoured it!”—Riley Sager, bestselling author of Final Girls

This book held my attention the entire time. I only listen to my audiobooks in the car on my commute but not with this one. I found myself listening while cooking and cleaning. I have a feeling there will be a second book and I really hope it happens! Dear Reese, in your movie version please cast Emily Blunt as the lead!

It started out a little slow at first, but once it got going I was hooked in! The ending could of been better but maybe that’s because I wanted it to keep going… lol Good read and great narration!

Interesting story, but the crazy amount of cussing was distracting and diminished the overall affect.

Such a FANTASTIC book. Could not stop listening from the very beginning, basically binged the whole book in less than 3 days. The fact that the author narrated the book herself makes it even more impressive, if that’s possible. Brilliant actress and writer.

The book was written with extreme detail and finesse. I agree that it would have been better with the "F" word substituted, but I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!

I really liked the story and the narration but was extremely disappointed in the authors use of the f*** word. It was consistently used and degraded the characters

This book built the suspense throughout! I couldn’t put it down, so to speak. I’ve read 3 Steadman novels and this might be my favorite.

Great plot that kept me very interested. Good twists and turns. The narrator was perfect. I think it was her voice that kept me interested beyond the story itself. I wanted to hear more when it was over!

It took me a while to get into this book, I left it and came back and glad I did. It was good, a little slow to start and I guessed the twist but still good. Author narration was also very good.

It was a good book! It’s the typical mystery novel. I had all sorts of suspects in mind as I listened. Typical ending… The narrator was AWESOME! So happy the author decided to narrate! I would listen to another book she reads!

I love this author! The story keeps you guessing from the beginning

Really surprised this book has so many great reviews. The main character was SO stupid, unlikable and unbelievable. I really did not care what happened to her by the end. The story itself started out pretty good but gradually got worse and worse and in the end nothing really tied together. It had potential but seriously no one in their right mind acts like the main character. Would not recommend this book.

It started off a little slow but it was very good and I loved how the storylines complimented each other and were seamless. It made perfect sense. I would recommend and feel like the author left me wondering if the main character could carry on into future novels. Excellent listen. Definitely recommend

Good story but too redundant. I did listen through and really liked it but I was able to fast forward several times and didn’t miss the extra words. Bummer on the wordiness

Great book. I could not stop listening. I think having the author as the narrator made it so good. The echoed phone calls was cool. I'm hoping there is series coming. Will read more of her books.

Loved the story; loved that Catherine herself narrated this. She was fantastic and so was the book!! I would highly recommend this book!

At first, I was hesitant - usually fiction read by the author is clunky, in my opinion. However, Catherine Steadman does a pretty good job of reading her own work. I kept listening - couldn't wait to hear how it all turned out.

Profile Avatar
Corinne R.

This book was awesome! Totally didn’t see the twist at the end. I listened to this book in 2 days. I couldn’t turn it off.

Profile Avatar
Stephanie K.

I have to disagree with the other reviews- the book was hard to get into, a lot of irrelevant details were told. The author was great at narrating the story herself and had an enjoyable voice, but I feel like the story itself could have been told in 7 hours and just as thorough. A decent book, but not suspenseful and fairly anti climatic.

What a page turner!! Great book - really enjoyed it

Very long audio book 11+ hours. The story moves a little slow then quickly wraps up without a true understanding of why things happened. Narration was enjoyable.

This was an overall good book with a very interesting ending. I thought it dragged a bit at times, and feel as though points to be made were drawn out further than necessary, but it was an overall good listen. The narrator being the author was wonderful and she has a beautiful voice.

This was a great book. Starts off super strong and finishes with an ending you'll never see coming. Left a sense of unease in me that I long for when reading a crime/thriller/mystery. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a non-stop thriller.

I want to see this as a movie! And the ending is a great segway to a sequel. Well done! Enjoyed it very much.
