Summary
“The hidden history of Bletchley Park has been waiting for a master storyteller like Kate Quinn to bring it to life. THE ROSE CODE effortlessly evokes the frantic, nervy, exuberant world of the Enigma codebreakers through the eyes of three extraordinary women who work in tireless secrecy to defeat the Nazis. Quinn’s meticulous research and impeccable characterization shine through this gripping and beautifully executed novel.”

Beatriz Williams, New York Times bestselling author of HER LAST FLIGHT

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Huntress and The Alice Network returns with another heart-stopping World War II story of three female code breakers at Bletchley Park and the spy they must root out after the war is over.

1940. As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything—beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses—but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets. Imperious self-made Mab, product of east-end London poverty, works the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and looks for a socially advantageous husband. Both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential in local village spinster Beth, whose shyness conceals a brilliant facility with puzzles, and soon Beth spreads her wings as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts. But war, loss, and the impossible pressure of secrecy will tear the three apart.

1947. As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip whips post-war Britain into a fever, three friends-turned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter--the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship and left one of them confined to an asylum. A mysterious traitor has emerged from the shadows of their Bletchley Park past, and now Osla, Mab, and Beth must resurrect their old alliance and crack one last code together. But each petal they remove from the rose code brings danger--and their true enemy--closer...

This was a great story, and I liked how much was based on actual facts and people. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life and creating distinction between their personalities through voice and tone.

Incredible book, incredible author and an incredible narrator! I had an enjoyable journey through this historical fictional book about the integral part that Bletchley Park played in the effort to end WWll. Each character was believable and written in the unique and intimate way that Kate Quinn writes all of her characters. Bravo Kate Quinn, you wrote a topping good story!

I love historic novels, especially those focusing on women in WWII and how they dealt with working, quite a few of them for the first time. I love them even more when they focus on women in the military or intelligence sectors during WWII. (I think some of my curiosity of listening to WWII books that take place on the European continent is because it was going on a hell of a lot longer than it was for America. It was a completely different war for America than it was for Russia and the rest of Europe. My grandfather was a medic for the US Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific Ocean somewhere. [He never did give us a straight answer. ] Pearl Harbor happened on his 21st birthday, December 7th. wherever his boat he was assigned to, was in the harbor by night fall to assist with rescue, recover, surgery's, medical treatments and palliative care.)So I know a lot about America's view of WWII and the history there, have seen a ton of museums, even visited Pearl Harbor the day after Veteran's Day. But I am drawn to these types of books like a moth to a flame. This one didn't leave me burned, yes I figured out the villain before it was announced in the book, but I have to say, not too early. It wasn't a book that was overly predictable. There were times that the tears were streaming down my cheeks, and others that I was laughing at and probably look like a mad woman myself while driving, making the 6 hour trip out of state. Do I think the book is worth my monthly credit, absolutely. There is no reason that I can think of to not like this book

I loved this book. Amazing what these women did for their country without letting on. The bombing of the dance hall was another historic event I read in a different book. It validated the research done by the author. Narrator was great too. I was absolutely knackered each day walking or riding bike so I could listen to another, then another, then another chapter.

There are so many WWII women spy books out now, I thought this was just another. I was wrong. This book was well written and brings our three main characters to life. Their story, as well as the real life story of the men and women of Benchley Park, was very interesting and informative. Highly recommend!

This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read! The author’s depiction of the three main female characters is masterful and relatable. The plot is driving and the narrator is skillful.

I love this narrator (although it must be said that her Glasgow accent is pretty poor! :-) and I really enjoyed the book. The characters were well-developed and easy to empathise with, and the plot was interesting, well-paced and never dull. Wartime Britain was well-depicted and important issues such as women's rights and racism were brought to the fore. I would be happy to listen to another novel by this writer.

I couldn’t stop listening. The book keeps you on your toes and ends with no loose ends.

Profile Avatar Sheila L Feb 2023

Well written suspense/secret society type novel, that's based in part on real life experiences and events. The narrator read this as if she was recalling the story rather than reading a book. She was perfect, made the book come to life if not seem real. It's a lengthy read, but oh so worth the time. I enjoyed the whole experience of this audiobook immensely!

I enjoyed this book, the history of BB, understanding another aspect of WWII history and women’s role within it, as well as the charismatic and fun characters within the book. The narration for the different characters was fantastic and Osla’s character made my day. Thank you to the author for taking the time to write, research, and fact check the accurate historical aspects of this book and making learning fun.
