Summary
It is very early in Jack Ryan’s career—so early that he has not yet even become an analyst for the CIA. But a series of nasty encounters with an IRA splinter group has brought Ryan to the attention of the CIA’s Deputy Director and his British counterpart. They offer him his first job as a freelance analyst, and he readily accepts. Debriefing a high-level Russian defector, however, he comes across an unbelievable plot: top Soviet officials, including Yuri Andropov, are planning to assassinate Pope John Paul II. Ryan must battle first to verify the plot, and then to stop it. But what chance does a novice CIA analyst have against a cat-and-mouse game between the world’s two great superpowers?

“Among the handful of superstars, Clancy still reigns, and he is not likely to be dethroned anytime soon.”—Washington Post

Not as good as some of Clancy's other Ryan novels, but still pretty good. Gives some decent insight into Jack and the others that we learn about more in later novels.

The book was pretty good. The narration took some time to get into. I did get to enjoy the fact that it was clearly copied from CD. There were continual prompts to change the disk! Ha!

GREAT way to drive across the continent. Good story, enough detail, not too many technical mistakes (a few to catch). Narration is good very enjoyable.

This book went nowhere. The repetitive insight into what each character was thinking was annoying but without it this book would filled 100 pages at best. Slow and dull.

Great book, well done. Too short, though. Lot's of detail left out. The conclusion was abbreviated into 10 minutes. Come on!!

Just ok. The way the book ended left me wanting more. Almost like this book was just written to set up the next one. If your a Tom Clancy fan and especially a Jack Ryan fan, you oughta read this one. If your not, don't bother.

Oddly, throughout this book, I had a sense of déjà vu, as if much of this book came from another previous Clancy book. I couldn't put my finger on it. Nevertheless, it was a good "read", though somewhat "flat", when compared to his prior efforts. I was still a fun read though, so I gave it an average score.

This is one of Tom Clancy's best works. It had all the feel of suspense and character development. I cared about the characters and wanted to listen more than my commute would allow each day.
