Summary
Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four. Now the basis for a highly acclaimed, award-winning Netflix series.

Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control.

By the age of sixteen, she is competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

I watched the Netflix series first, so I obviously have a bias, but I feel this book is lovely and very nearly as charming as the show. The narrator did all she could to give life to these characters and I aphasia her for it.

It was a lot more sexual than the Netflix movie. Without watching the show I think it would be hard to follow.

I just finished the audible book after watching the series It is one of the few books that I loved as much if not more than the movie. Netflix did a fantastic job of following the book with minor changes , The book was written in the early 1980's which was never apparent. I found listening enthralling, having a difficult time stopping my listening. The narrator is masterful of keeping your interest as well. Definitely a book to share for book clubs and with friends.

The book is fine, but this is a first, the Netflix series was much better. I am a strong chess player myself, a Master since 1985. The book didn't have the biological mother of Beth as an important character. This was a crucial element in the series and laid the background of Beth's struggles. I'm glad I listen to the book, but will cherish the Netflix series.

I love this book! At first I wasn’t a fan of the narrator, but I easily got used to her voice, I feel that it matches Beth and the way the book was written, so I enjoyed the novel.

I’ve watched the series on Netflix and I wanted to read the book to see how different it was. There are only minor differences if you’re wondering too. Awesome book with a great original storyline.
