Summary
“Brilliantly conceived and plotted … Read this book. You’ll thank me later.” -- David Baldacci

The first in the international bestselling series!

Who is Orphan X?

The Nowhere Man is a legendary figure spoken about only in whispers. It’s said that when he’s reached by the truly desperate and deserving, the Nowhere Man can and will do anything to protect and save them. But he’s not merely a legend.

“Excellent…A smart, stylish, state-of-the-art thriller…might give Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books a run for their money.”—The Washington Post

Evan Smoak is a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn. He’s also a man with a dangerous past. Chosen as a child, he was raised and trained as an Orphan, an off-the-books black box program designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence asset: An assassin. Evan was Orphan X—until he broke with the program and used everything he learned to disappear. But now someone is on his tail. Someone with similar skills and training who will exploit Evan’s secret new identity as the Nowhere Man to eliminate him.

“Hurwitz melds nonstop action and high-tech gadgetry…in this excellent series opener.”

I love this book! I can't wait to listen to more of Hurwitz! This is my first audio book and I am very pleased! The narrator's voice flows so nicely, I don't have to focus on the book and only the book!

This is my second time giving this series a try. I read this book last year and it was just OK, pretty meh for me. This year, I like it a bit better. Maybe I found it easier to slip into this fantasy of a highly trained operative gone rogue who spends his time and talents helping those in great need. For whatever reason, it was fun. I really like how Evan is so organized and great at his chosen mission and yet one downstairs kid and his mom can throw him for a loop. Oh, no! Little kid fingerprints all over his kitchen! Haha! I think Mia and her son are good for him. The ladies were plot devices in this book and I wanted them to be more. They don’t have much depth and are sexualized in some manner – wholesome Mia, sex kitten Candy (Orphan V), whatsherface who is in danger, etc. I hope the ladies get better roles moving forward. Evan does get played and I found that very interesting, as well as his reaction to it. I do believe he would have found a way to help if certain people were upfront with him from the beginning. However, it made for some good drama near the end. Overall, it’s fun but lacks depth. 3/5 stars. The Narration: Scott Brick is an audiobook favorite so I did a little jump for joy when I saw he narrated this series. I love his controlled, serious voice for Evan. He also has a range of voices and accents for the entire cast, keeping all the characters individual. His female voices could use a touch more femininity. The pacing was perfect and there were no tech errors with this recording. 4.5/5 stars.

Great book. I’m looking forward to the next. If you are wanting a series that elevates the cloak and dagger Genre this is it.

Orphan X does touch a nerve about creating "superspooks" who use all the tech devices to tract people. This character should to be continued to right wrongs. Scott Brick is a 5 star narrator.
