A great book. It started on a run and just got better

First half of the book was excellent, but then it degenerates into a right-wing diatribe against the evil bloated government full of corrupt individuals only interested in how they can get rich from their positions and stick it to the freedom loving private citizens, who need to arm themselves and fight back.

Story was fine. Narrator wasn’t engaging at all and one character voice sounded like Christian Bale in Batman

Good story line for the first two thirds. Last third was just preaching with all the subtlety of a baseball bat. Captivating until...yawn. Why doesn't the author just write a manifesto and tell us how he really feels!

I found myself reaching to finish this at every opportunity. It is my second read from this author - I think I will read more.

The more books I listen to in this series, the better they get. The authors firearm knowledge is lacking a little, but great stories.

An incredibly suspenseful story ultimately undermined by a childish, poorly articulated right-wing political diatribe at the end. Such a shame. This is my first C.J. Box book, so maybe the author does such nonsense routinely? Such a turnoff in the end.

Enjoyed the book. Hadn’t realized when I downloaded the book, that it was a series of books and I haven’t listened to any others. I have actually seen the 1st season of Joe Pickett show on Netflix. It helped with knowing a bit about the background of the story. Narration was great.

This makes me think of old westerns a bit…which was a great change. Well written.

The narration drove me crazy with the “he said” “Nate said” etc With the changes of voices after every sentence there was no need to say who said it!!!! It was obvious!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I'm thinking of reading more of this author's work. I'm wondering if they will be similar to this one.

The story does have some interesting twist and turns. But it ends too abruptly leaving you hanging. Very irritating.

Oh my goodness, where to begin? First off, it took me a bit to decide if it was the book itself or the narrator that was the most ridiculously horrible. After careful, open minded consideration of the first few chapters, I knew it was a tie. I tried so hard to come to like both. I'd heard so much about C.J. Box I was looking forward to listening to him for my first time. Um.. did anyone else wonder why he writes like a middle school kid in literature class? And the reader- my god, man. You sound like a golf tournament announcer.

This was a free book that had good reviews and I'm glad I tried it. It was a nice change of pace from listening to female narrators. Reminded me Louis L'Amour books my husband and I used to listen to on road trips. I was a little disappointed in the ending. I actually repeated the last hour to make sure I didn't miss something. All in all, it held my interest and I enjoyed it. Will be on the lookout for more free books by CJ Box.

This was the first experience with a Box novel. There were moments of excitement at the beginning and the end with a long rather dry section in the middle (I am assuming to tie this to the previous novels in this series). Would rate the book as just ok.

It took me a while to get into this book. This was my first by this author and I only downloaded it because it was free. The story line behind this character is fair but it’s not a book that I will continue in the series. Perhaps it was the narrator but it was painfully slow to get thru. The ending was very good and I was pleasantly surprised by that. But the choice of narrator was a snooze. His voice varied very little throughout. Glad I tried it, but won’t be getting another one.

I like the series. Also liked the "bad guys" not necessarily being bad for a change. Issues and ethics. Did a good job of making the good guys think, but not much for making the "bad guys" think.

I like a good mystery, so after reading so many positive reviews, I decided to give this title a try. I was very disappointed with this book, and I'm surprised it got such high ratings. If you appreciate master storytellers with unpredictable storylines who have a beautiful command of language, then you won't enjoy this book. The writing is average at best, and the dialogue is awkward. The uncomplicated plot is so-so and doesn't unfold in a way that builds suspense. The story is flat with a mere hiccup for a climax. The resolution is pretty lame too. There was potential for unique characters, but they weren't developed much. The book was more like a microwaveable TV dinner that has little taste or nutritional value than a delicious gourmet meal that you can't stop eating. I suggest listening to the free sample before purchasing this book. If you don't like the sample, you won't like the book.

They started off being a really interesting story, and here comes a spoiler so if you don’t want to know what happens partway through then don’t read any further. But this guy gets shot multiple times with arrows and guns but his sheriff from his town doesn’t believe him oh my gosh! Why is it in every book all the cops are against each other nobody works together?I don’t believe it’s true. It just makes the story tedious I don’t think I’ll probably finish it for that reason

I love the Joe Picket series and I’m not sure I could ever pick a favorite, but this book would be a contender! I’ve read the entire 21 books in the series, and am just two books away from listening to them all. This narrator has done an excellent job.
