Summary
The Lane Fleming collection of early pistols and revolvers was one of the best in the country. When Fleming was found dead on the floor of his locked gunroom, a Confederate-made Colt-type percussion .36 revolver in his hand, the coroner's verdict was "death by accident." But Gladys Fleming had her doubts. Enough at any rate to engage Colonel Jefferson Davis Rand—better known just as Jeff—private detective and a pistol-collector himself, to catalogue, appraise, and negotiate the sale of her late husband's collection. There were a number of people who had wanted the collection. The question was: had anyone wanted it badly enough to kill Fleming? And if so, how had he done it? Here is a mystery, told against the fascinating background of old guns and gun-collecting, which is rapid-fire without being hysterical, exciting without losing its contact with reason, and which introduces a personable and intelligent new private detective. It is a story that will keep your nerves on a hair trigger even if you don't know the difference between a cased pair of Paterson .34's and a Texas .40 with a ramming-lever. (Summary from the text)

Great story! I downloaded this one mainly for my husband to enjoy while we took a road trip. It was fascinating and held our attention. Although you really have to listen closely in order to keep up with all of the different characters and such. Still a great book. The narrators did a good job.

Classic who done it. Highly technical with respect to historic side arms.

Profile Avatar Kathy King Jun 2016

This is a fun (almost) hard-boiled detective story with a couple of surprises. it's also read well.

A lot of detail about collectible firearms! Good old gumshoe story. Narrator was nice and clear and his voice suited the story.

Very interesting.

I got bogged down in all the "details" of the guns etc but I enjoyed the murder mystery story line and it moved along at a great pace.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2020

Thoroughly enjoyed. And the narrator was great.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2020

This book was 50 percent long winded listing of guns.

Profile Avatar GilbertMouse Oct 2020

A good fun read. Very specific descriptions of antique guns which some readers will enjoy. Some of the characters are just that; characters, but the mystery is strong enough to hold the story together.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2020

Well written and entertaining

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

A nice story but the tail becomes a bit flat and by the end it was nice to know who did who.

Profile Avatar Anonymous May 2020

Very good plot with some twists and turns. Narrator was very good.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2020

Great surprise ending. Narrator was very well spoken and it seemed as if he was the detective dictating the case to a secretary for filing

Sometimes hard to follow characters
