Hanks’s foray into fiction has the density, length, and character list worthy of a Dickens or Dostoyevsky—-but with none of the forethought or skill. Disjointed and rudderless, fraught with editorial flaws, this one leaves the reader perpetually confused and ultimately bored. Skip it.
