Summary
From the dark days of WWII to present-day North Carolina, this New York Times bestseller shares the lives of two couples overcoming destructive secrets -- and finding joy together.

Ira Levinson is in trouble. Ninety-one years old and stranded and injured after a car crash, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes beside him: his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago. Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together - how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families. Ira knows that Ruth can't possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.
A few miles away, at a local bull-riding event, a Wake Forest College senior's life is about to change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school. Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward -- even life and death - loom large in everyday life. As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans -- a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he's keeping doesn't destroy it first.
Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

Lovely book! Good/happy tears, and sad tears. I watched the movie after I read the book. The books are always better I find. Narrator did a great job.

Loved the book! I thought the narrator did a good job with the voices. Cried myself to work and back several days while i listened to the book. Found myself sitting in the company parking lot listening to just one more page...

Don't remember ever wiping my eyes as much listening to a book. Loved the story lines as well as the narration! Will read more of Nicolas Sparks when my tear ducts refill. On a scale of 5, I'd vote 10!

The movie was better than the book. I found the book to babble on at thine and the voice Luke did not fit. It was a nice story

I bought this book because of all of the good reviews and because I have loved every Sparks book I've read up to this point. This book was very boring to me. Just two different couples talking back and forth. One replaying memories and the other getting to know each other. There was nothing that drew me with the feeling of wanting to keep reading to learn more. I had to continue to this to this dreadfully boring book however because I was driving cross country by myself and it was my only audiobook. Bottom line: super boring and a huge disappointment. I grew to really dislike Ira's wife too!

Ron McClarty has to be the best narrator around. He makes every book worth while - I search his name out and buy the book based on him as the narrator. The story was excellent - however i thought the ending was predictable and a little hokey. But I would recommend this book.

He did it, yet again! Sweet, lovely story. Well worth every minute spent listening. I was sad to part with these characters at the end. The narration was second to none. They really brought this tale to life and pulled you in immediately.
