“A classic that we will read for years to come.” —Jenna Bush Hager, Read with Jenna book club

“Fantastic. Set in 1954, Towles uses the story of two brothers to show that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as we might hope.” —Bill Gates

“A real joyride . . . elegantly constructed and compulsively readable.” —NPR

The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. “Once again, I was wowed by Towles’s writing—especially because The Lincoln Highway is so different from A Gentleman in Moscow in terms of setting, plot, and themes. Towles is not a one-trick pony. Like all the best storytellers, he has range. He takes inspiration from famous hero’s journeys, including The Iliad, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. He seems to be saying that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway. But, he suggests, when something (or someone) tries to steer us off course, it is possible to take the wheel.” – Bill Gates

I found this book enthralling, couldn’t stop listening …credit to both the writer…love your books Amor as well as easy to listen to narrators that pull you in. This charming story introduces you to the most interesting characters and takes you on a journey that covers the gambit of thrilling, sensitive, educational, personal growth, generational influence and much more. Fabulous read…sequel please

Towles knocks it out if the park again. His mastery of story telling and weaving in all the nuanced layers of the story is 2nd to none. Additionally the voice actors lend an amazing realism to the story so much so that you actually feel like your right there in the middle of the action!! Well worth the listen!!!!

I loved it....I will listen/read this novel again.

Profile Avatar Bill R. Dec 2022

Very much enjoy Towles style, and I thought telling the story from each character's perspective was great.

I’ve been a listener to audiobooks for 4 years and I’ve listened to some great books but this one!! It hit so many emotions for me. Absolutely my favorite and brought me to make my first remark on here an absolute winner this tale.

It's been a while since a book hooked me so completely. I couldn't wait to find excuses to put in my headphones and enjoy the tale for while. Beautifully written and artfully narrated!

Sometimes I would get lost and wonder what happened but it was just because they kept switching characters. I enjoyed the book, kept me interested in what was going to happen next, and some statements were very thought provocative

Profile Avatar Jack B. Oct 2021

Took a flyer on this one and was rewarded with a great read. Good character development both the good and bad ones, wonderful story about second chances. I will go back now and check out his other books. Mr Towles is an excellent writer.

I loved this book. I downloaded it to listen to on my dog walks but had to listen pretty much continuously until it was finished. It's the kind of book that you don't want to end and with characters that you miss for ages after the book is finished. I will be looking for more books by this author.

Profile Avatar Heather D. Aug 2024

I agree wholeheartedly with Kathy’s and Brian’s reviews below! I didn’t want to stop listening and I didn’t want it to end. Very satisfying read. I love Amor’s writing!!

Profile Avatar Susan S. Feb 2024

I really liked this book! Some of the storyline was strange but in the end I was very happy!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Nov 2023

This is the best book I have read in a very long time. You won’t be disappointed….

Profile Avatar April B. Oct 2023

I absolutely loved this book. I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this certainly deserved it. I listened to the book and was riveted. Such amazing and fun details and twists.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2023

My husband and I listened together. We both were highly entertained - funny, sad, clever… enjoyed very much.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Oct 2023

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I have been intending to buy the book, however ended up buying others. The Lincoln Highway is the type of boyhood story my sons would've enjoyed as preteens, just as they did Bob War, Huck Finn and A Long Way Gone. And a splendid read as I would expect from Amor Towels.

Profile Avatar Joy S. Sep 2023

My reading group choose this as our book this month. Fascinating read and great narration. Little disturbed by several things that happened but still a great read. Wanted more details at the end.

Profile Avatar Dwolfe Aug 2023

I became a fan of Towles after reading a Gentleman in Moscow, a truly delightful tale told in an equally delightful style. The style here is somewhat different, and it packs a bit more of a punch, but the tale remains an immersive delight.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2023

Author and narrator both are wonderful at telling a good story. Easy to listen to and very enjoyable. The book is not as good as “A Gentleman in Moscow” but still worth a read or listen.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2023

Excellent story and narration!

Profile Avatar Cindy P. Apr 2023

Great Character development! Couldn't stop listening. Absolute best book I've listened to in years and I average two to three books a week.

Profile Avatar Elizabeth S. Mar 2023

Excellent read; especially good character development. Always enjoy the theme of second chances. Terrific writer!

Beautifully narrated by three readers, this story, with its convoluted--and to me, rather annoying plot--and its unbelievable characters (considering it is set in the mid-1950s), is nonetheless compelling. The narrators (especially the gifted Edoardo Ballerini) carry the story along with energy and humor. It's impossible not to mention the sheer inventiveness of the author, Amor Towles. All the same, a few characters could be removed without any loss to the story, which would eliminate a few boring scenes.

Profile Avatar Cheryl Z. Jan 2023

Outstanding story!!! I was riveted! And unlike many other books the ending was perfect. The characters were interesting and the author didn’t leave any stone unturned. Highly recommend!

Profile Avatar Jacquelyn E. Dec 2022

Great book. Enjoyed the ride. The ending was a bit abrupt. I loved the characters. It’s hard for me sometimes to get into these overly descriptive books. I’d like for the author to just get on with it. But all in all it was a real good ride.

Profile Avatar Ellen W. Nov 2022

Awesome storytelling!!

Profile Avatar Barbara L. Oct 2022

Loved this book! In my top best reads for the year. I loved the characters, the unexpected turns, and the story itself. Well written and beautifully narrated.

Profile Avatar Kari G. Aug 2022

Fantastic book, so well read! So many layers and allegories. And I was there with them all the time. Thank you for the lift!

Profile Avatar Marcus G. Aug 2022

The title is misleading; it takes the whole story to really get to it. Well-written, but with many tangetial "birdwalks" which may or may not embellish the plot (I'll let you decide). Again, the book is well-written and pleases the listeners ear.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2022

Fantastic story and narrator

Profile Avatar Jill B. Jun 2022

We really enjoyed this book. Such a good author. Liked the character development. We were on a long road trip. But not quite long enough. We finished it after we unpacked and were doing laundry. :)

Profile Avatar Fran J. May 2022

This book was a pleasure, and I will say it was one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. The narrators were fabulous, the story was engaging, I didn't want it to end!

Profile Avatar Nancy T. May 2022

I loved this book!! I never rate but need to on this one! I listen to this book two weeks ago and I miss it and miss the characters.. It was beautifully written, Narrator was best I have listened to. Love, love, love.

Profile Avatar Shirley A. May 2022

Thoroughly enjoyed the story and narration.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2022

Great book. I have read it twice. Wonderful characters!!!

Profile Avatar Alan R. Mar 2022

i thought it was a great story. very well narrated, I enjoyed the listen.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2022

Fun with light humor, a bit understated and subtle but as a whole it possesses plenty of depth and profundity. A relatively short novel, worthwhile for sure!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2022

Great book! Intriguing, compelling, heart felt story line. Loved each of the characters! Narrators were great vocal artists. Read listen well worth it.

Profile Avatar Victoria G. Feb 2022

The narration was excellent. The plot was entertaining with well-developed characters.

Profile Avatar Kenneth D. Jan 2022

Totally different from A Gentleman from Moscow; however, it was just as delightful! A book with seven different “First Person” perspectives enabled the listener to detect how different charters perceived the same experiences so remarkably different. Towels sentence structure and, descriptions and writing in general was a delight to listen to. All of the narrators were FABULOUS! Obviously, I really enjoyed the book!

Profile Avatar Wanda H. Jan 2022

Very enjoyable book. The story develops somewhat slowly for my taste but the descriptions and characters are very well described. The author makes them all come to life. Now I would like another book to get the main characters to their originally planned destination. And that ending!!!!!!! I didn't see that coming.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jan 2022

Profile Avatar Renae Rountree Dec 2021

I am convinced this book will become one of the classics that every one must read in school. The writing style is unique and magnificent. The story provokes every emotion, and the main narrator is the best I’ve heard.
