Summary
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) proves once again that she is “as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post) with this propulsive murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I wanted to get into this story, but it was somewhat dragged out and not full of substance for the length of the book. Hannah as a main character was a bit annoying, and the conclusion seemed far fetched also.

I am not a fan of the main character, Hannah. She is whiny and somewhat ignorant. It dragged on for longer than I would have liked and I figured out the killer right from the beginning but the how was an interesting twist.

It was difficult to hear narrator on phone conversations. Ugh

Great listen. The story was clever and well written. I thought I’d solved it, until the end. I am a fan of Ruth Ware’s books, and this one doesn’t disappoint. The narrator is great, too.

Another great Ruth Ware book. There’s no better narrator than Imogene Church.

Great narration. Good plot twists. Jumps back and forth but once you get used to it - makes sense. Didn’t want to put it down

I always want to like Ruth Ware books, but again, I am so disappointed that it's the same annoying unlikable lead character and another silly predictable story.

Warning, spoilers. There is a lot I liked about this book. Great mystery. But I had a hard time seeing Hannah as a protagonist. Her simpering dedication to her cruel roommate was hard to take. All her friends saw through April but she just swallowed every icky thing April did. This blind discipleship may be realist in girl world, but it’s still infuriating. And I couldn’t understand her constant self-recrimination, even after the truth was out. She truthfully told the sequence of events as she sincerely saw them. That’s all anyone can do. At the end I wanted to shout “cut the martyr act, girl!”

I thought the story line was very good and the twist at the end surprising. But I simply did not like the main character.....she was too spineless and whiny for me.
