Summary
Healing the Shame that Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times bestselling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives.

In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools-affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques-that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

Absolutely amazing! I wish my parents had read this back in the 80's and as a parent I had it when raising my own son in the 90's...It is life changing, really!

Too much physiological talk - a lot of rambling circles that were big lofty words than actually pointing to a solution I felt.

good lord! some interesting insight into shame in an emotional context is gradually drowned out by a pious onslaught of pseudo-philosophical &pseudo-spiritual insubstantiated hot air. a real shame, as there’s a good book in here if he could’ve separated out his delusional sounding born-again musings from the psychological insight.

Do not take my review as the end-all-be-all I am not into going back into childhood memories. This is a look through the eyes of someone with a historical or traditional view of psychology and therapy. If you have hang-ups around sex and a bad childhood this could the book that will help. I just know it wasn't written for me. I gave it 3 star because I didn't want to hurt the ratings to much I should have done more research into what it was about. Maybe I am just avoiding my issues but don't think so.. :)
