Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

“What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?”

Well-written. The narrator, Bahni Turpin, did a fantastic job of bringing this piece to life!

Really enjoyed this book. It shed light on the current BLM movement and gave the perspective from a 16 year old girl. Great read for young adults, but I think any age could enjoy it.

Wonderful book! The author does an amazing job painting a beautiful story, and the narrator does an amazing job!

I really liked this book a lot and how the narrator read it and how she brought it to life. This book made me cry and made me laugh. It also made me see how this is still going on now and how we all need to get together and fight the fight and Help each other.

This book touched my heart! It really dives deep into the innocence and importance behind the BLM movement in today’s society. The narrator did a great job making this book come to life and the characters/ storyline is amazing!

The book is a beautiful piece of work, it shares real and deep entrenched issues, I never followed these of black-matters so much because am in Africa, but after listening to this book, i want to be as informed as possible on the progress that is made in ensuring that justice is justice regardless of race. Narrator made me pay undivided attention. Its the book I have listened and followed so intently. I love its narration and the story-line. Thanks.

The narrator did a great job bringing each character to life. This book made me cry and laugh many times. As a white woman reading this (and on top of the BLM movement) it definitely puts into perspective what black, men, women and children go through on a daily basis and how horrible our society still is. This book should be a required read for every English class and home, throughout the US, as there are many teachable moments in it.

Profile Avatar Valerie F. Apr 2020

This is one of the best audiobooks I have yet to listen to. Maybe it was the narrator or maybe it was the story line of the book or maybe it was both. Either way it was an enjoyable experience to read this book.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Sep 2019

I know this book is good because I watched the movie too now that right there bring the whole book to life!!!!!!!!!!

Profile Avatar Lud B. Aug 2019

It's a beautiful and intense novel with so much truth to it

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2019

Wonderful, important book to listen to with my 13 year old (white) son. We listened on a long road trip together and the book gave us lots to think about and talk about. It is so important for us to hear the experiences of others in order to understand better and hopefully be better. A story from the perspective of a teenager is crucial for other teenagers to relate to more effectively.

Profile Avatar Mignon W. May 2019

Love this book!!!

Profile Avatar Candace G. Mar 2019

This book was as brilliant as I thought it would be! The narrator was amazing, you could feel every emotion! I HIGHLY recommend this book. Great job Ms. Angie!

Profile Avatar D G. Nov 2018

Disappointing. We downloaded this book to listen to on a family road trip (my 3 kids are teenagers). It is NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY due to the sexual content and appalling language. We felt like we were being verbally assaulted over and over again. We couldn't even finish listening to it, despite our interest in the characters. The foul language was not necessary to the plot development, and the F word was used so many times it felt like auditory rape. As for narration, my daughter didn't like the narrator's voice, but the rest of us thought she did a good job.

Profile Avatar Skylar L. Nov 2018

Great book. The problem I have with this is why don't they have the audio labeled by chapters if you need to go back or something. The fact that they want you to pay it needs to be better quality coming from their end. The narrator is great but she is a slow reader so this is drug out way more than necessary.

Profile Avatar Angela L. Oct 2018

Great story. All should be exposed to the reality of what happened. The narrator was awesome! This is good work. Will consider using it as a teaching tool.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Aug 2018

I think it was awesome and how the narrator changed voices depending on who was speaking....GENIUS!

Profile Avatar Alison W. Jul 2018

Wow, just wonderful. Brilliant narration and brilliant writing. I can’t recommend this book enough, particularly for white readers (listeners). It really gets to the core of the nuances and heartbreaks of injustice as well as our shared humanity.

Profile Avatar Cynthia V Sep 2017

Excellent book easy to listen to, I love her for that.

Profile Avatar L k May 2017

An amazing book that makes you think.

Profile Avatar Melitsa A Apr 2017

Powerful telling story of Star, a 16 year old black girl who is in the car when her friend is shot by the police after being stopped. 2016, black lives matter, politics of the police shootings is the backdrop to this. Also black girl in a white prep school and how that plays out for her friends there and back home. Lots of issues discussed and raised in a real way. Cursing sprinkled throughout but realistic and real. One to share with your teen especially the beginning. What to do when you are stopped by the police and you are black.
