Summary
An ordinary life …

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She’s an up-and-coming defense attorney at a prestigious law firm in Atlanta, would do anything for her sixteen-year-old daughter, Maddy, and is managing to successfully co-parent through a pandemic after an amicable separation from her husband, Walter.

Hides a devastating past …

But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood no one should have to endure … a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and ultimately destroyed by a brutal act of violence.

But now the past is catching up …

On a Sunday night at her daughter’s school play, she gets a call from one of the firm’s partners, who wants Leigh to come on board to defend a wealthy man accused of multiple counts of rape. Though wary of the case, it becomes apparent she doesn’t have much choice if she wants to keep her job. They’re scheduled to go to trial in one week. When she meets the accused face-to-face, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s specifically asked for her to represent him. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he may know what happened over twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades avoiding her past.

And time is running out.

Suddenly she has a lot more to lose than this case. The only person who can help is her younger, estranged sister, Callie—the last person Leigh would ever want to drag into this after all they’ve been through. But with the life-shattering truth in danger of being revealed, she has no choice …

I can't even get into the book. The author thinks it's more important to share her political views on face masks, mandates, viruses, and pandemics. It's so obvious what her political view is on the masks and everything I'm not even into this book 2 hours of a 19 hour book and I can't listen to it. Thanks a lot for wasting my money and time. If I wanted to listen about masks and all the propaganda that goes with it. All I have to do is watch the news and listen to their propaganda for free. So now everybody has to listen to authors political views along with everybody else's when they don't want to hear them. I will never buy another book from this author again

loved this book and the strong enduring relationship of sisters. One of my favorite authors.

I was speechless at the end of this book. I thought I was open minded originally, but this book made me open my eyes more. The way Karin writes characters makes your heart thud when something puts them at danger, and the story behind Dr. made me tear up. The ending broke me, but was beautiful and resolving. The mention of Covid and living through the pandemic wasn’t loved by some reviewers, but I thought it was perfect. The way she wrote about it put the characters opinion out but didn’t overtake from the story. In my eyes, her stress of covid and being tidy could be tied to the fact (SPOILERS) Cali had it, and though she can be stressed about her sisters condition, she never wanted to lose her. I think it played more on her need to be clean after a dark and hard past as well, but I tend to look too far into books. (: loved this, and plan to buy a paperback or hard copy.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time, by one of my favorite authors. And the narrator is absolutely mesmerizing to listen to- she is amazing. It was fast paced, thrilling and suspenseful. But I think my favorite thing was the character development and the relationships amongst all characters. I don’t remember the last time I read a book, and finished it feeling like I truly knew the characters myself! Amazing read. 11/10 stars!

I enjoyed this book. I get that she was writing it during covid, but it was focused a lot in the story and I feel less of that could of helped make it a little shorter. Just a little too long, but good book. I would recommend, but not my favorite of hers.

A bit wordy and repetitive. Nice job of describing the awful world of addiction.

I loved this story. It had me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. Kathleen Early is absolutely the best narrator I have listened to.

I like this book much more than Sara Vaughn anatomy of a scandal. I did not find the tone preachy. I loved how the Covid was part of the book. WIf you liked this book try her grant count series and her will Trent series. Most of the time her standalones are not as good because it’s hard to get as emotionally invested compared to the books I mentioned. I recommend this book. Karin Slaughter is masterful. Publishing a book of this quality during Covid is a great accomplishment. I am struggling to go out to buy groceries and gas.

Would be 5 stars except it is too long. Needless informational sections detracted from the story.

A captivating book but the content of child abuse is disturbing. At times it was too intense. Narrating was very good!

I think if I heard the’f’ word one more time I would have screamed. I so wish that Karin could back off the vulgar language and let the books carry the load, not the vulgarity. I know that I could have stopped listening but I wanted to know how the story ended. Her books always have the graphic sex, mutilations to bodies and the language. Maybe that’s what sells. This will probably be my last one.
