Unabridged Audiobook
I wish I could express my admiration for this book, with half the eloquence with which it was written. By turn savage, heartbreaking, chilling, and then uplifting in its portraits of we humans, in our kindness and cruelty. Some heroes wear baggy jeans and trainers, and I thank God for them. The surprise at the end took me aback, but no spoilers. This book is beautifully suited to the audiobook format.
Heartbreaking, funny, and hopeful? Yes, all three. What a fantastic survivor Eleanor is.Everyone should have a pal like a Raymond, too.
Slow start, then very enjoyable! Excellent narration. Definitely worth that kind of missing the book now that it’s over. Give it a try.
I really enjoyed this book!! And the Narrator did a fabulous job!! I didn't know anything about this book or author and I'm so glad I tried it!!
Loved this story. Ended a little too quickly but can't wait for the sequel ( hint, hint). The Scottish accent was beautiful to listen to and easy to understand. Brilliant!
I really liked this book and looked forward to my daily listen . I miss Eleanor now that it’s over .
Hands down the best book ever. Her keen witty phrasings had me laughing out loud. I wrote a few down for myself to memorize and use at the appropriate moment. My book clubs number one favorite book.
COMPLETELY DRY I kept seeing reviews for this book and it was a recommended book amongst my book club so i thought why not, however I didn't really think this book was good read. I understand the message it was portraying yet the story was a bit dry. The author could of talked about the deranged mother more, to show Eleanor's survival and mainframe after dealing with her mothers failed attempt yo kill her and the death of her sister. The after affects of the foster homes and living alone after trauma. there's so many ways or directions that could have been taken to show a clearer picture and to make the story more enjoyable. oh well, can't get that time back, on to the next one. #book23of2019 #bookworm #whatsnext
Gail Honeyman takes an interesting approach to sharing the life of someone suffering from mental illness. From the beginning I though Eleanor could have been a character from a Frederic Bachman novel, with some of thé eccentricities of people we meet in our lives (if not ourselves). As the story develops, we are brought inside her head and we gradually learn of the trauma that has shaped her. The story is filled with rich characters and real life twists. Wonderfully written
Mind numbingly boring. I wouldn’t have finished it if it weren’t for my book club. Not sure how so many people enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved this book! She pieces the story together in a wonderfully subtle way, so don’t miss a word. Loved so much I’m planning to listen again
This book was really hard to finish. Easy to put down and hardly ever exciting. The narrator was great and depicted the character well, however I found myself bored through nearly the entire book.
I adored this sweet book of unexpected friendships and self discovery. It seamlessly walked into uncomfortable depths that brought me into an understanding of the different ways people go about life in order to protect themselves, emotionally, from their past. This was such a wonderful listen. I pray that the movie doesn't diminish this wonderful book.
Unsentimental look at childhood trauma and the need for human interaction as a remedy for healing. Characters slightly exaggerated but lovely to know over the course of the story.
Loved this book. A great story of how friendship can bring you the help and strength you never knew you needed. Wonderfully written both heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measures.
I found the book dragging & depressing. I think I understand what the author was trying to do, but this was unrealistic - especially the final plot twist. If it was not for the great narration, I would have never bothered to finish the book
Eleanor, is an old friend I like to visit every couple of months! A must read!
I really loved this book. The story is lovingly and humorously told by a terrific narrator. I could listen to her all day! So enjoyed learning Eleanor’s life story and her survival.
Exceptional book. I'm still thinking about them.
Eleanor Oliphant is much, much better than fine. This is one of the best books I have listened to or read in quite some time. I had a hard time putting it down once I started to get into it, and may actually listen to it again. It is impossible not to love socially awkward, overly honest Eleanor. And everyone on Earth should have a Raymond in their life.
Beautiful story. The narrator was fabulous. Your investment in the characters begins immediately.
At first it was slow, but after you get a sense of Eleanor's quirky personality and feel almost sorry for her. More things are revealed in the story and you can't help but to like her more and more. You later on discover more about her life and empathize with her. The narrator does such a great job with the characters! Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Great character development and portrayal. Excellent narration! Loved this story
It was passively entertaining but a bit slow
It’s not riveting, but it’s a sweet, well written story about coping with trauma and the importance of friendship. One little twist at the end that made it interesting. Narrator was excellent.
Entertaining, well done, not something I’m super into. Highly talented author
wonderful read! wonderful narrator!
Interesting read. Very entertaining. Interesting how our behaviors, character and life can be shaped by the actions of another. I didn’t want to stop reading and I am awaiting the sequel of Eleanor’s journey.
I loved this book. Everything about it was so endearing. The story draws you in from the start, funny and sad at the same time. The narrator is wonderful, perfect for this story. Most of my family and friends who read this book agree it is one of their favorites as well.
Very interesting storyline. Not something I usually read but so glad I did. Eleanor's metamorphosis was frustrating at timesbut ultimately engaging. I did not like the narration. The Scottish accents were hard to understand I kept on having to rewind and even then didn't get what was being said
Really terrific story well written couldn’t put it down
It is a beautiful story.
Loved it
Nooope. One of those books that wants a to be a modern Jane Austin without the substance.
Great story of survival & healing! We could all use a friend like R!
An odd person. Odd book. Really lovely when it all ties together. Highly recommend it
Love this book, listened twice. Incredibly written. I loved Elenor! I am listening to a new book and find myself missing this book.
Great ! Different ! This is talent !
Loved every minute!!
the book was better than expected, I immediately was hooked on Eleanor. the narrator was incredible, I'm looking forward to hearing more of her narrations!
I absolutely loved this book. The story was engaging and even funny at times. I could feel Eleanor’s pain in her darkest moments. The narrator was fantastic and I really didn’t want this book to end!
Fabulous Narration. Witty and clever plot . Laughing. And crying. Absolutely horrific in places. Hopeful and insightful reading.
Loved this book and the narrator really brought it to the next level. I love her Scottish accents.
This book was fabulous! The narrator was outstanding. I can’t wait for more novels by Gail Honeyman. Thank you for bring this book to us.
Oh goodness this book was wonderful. Still drying my tears for Eleanors victories and her friends’ compassion. It was slow to start and the characters gruff personality was off putting, but as the story unfolds, you realize why she behaves the way she does. The narrator has such a beautiful voice and cadence. I will be listening to this book again.
This is win of the best books I’ve read this year! I loved the narrator, she did an amazing job and in fact was more fun to read on audiobook because of her. This book made me laugh, cry and be more emphatic to humans. Can’t recommend it enough!
In the beginning of this book, I didn’t think I would like the main character or the storyline. I was totally wrong! I stayed with it and was quickly hooked! Some of Eleanor’s descriptions made me laugh out loud. I really hated to reach the end of this charming, thoughtful, quirky novel. I hope the move gets made!
Don’t hesitate! It’s wonderful.
My new favourite book.
Listen to this book!! The story, characters, and lovely accents are such that I couldn’t stop listening!
This book came highly recommended, but it took me a while to get into it. The protagonist isn’t immediately likable, which is no doubt intentional. By the end of the book, I didn’t want it to end. Heartbreaking, funny, romantic, and filled with hope all at once. Stick with her, she’s worth knowing!
I love the English accent which makes this a good listen. Good story, fun characters
loved it!
Amusing. Heartwarming. Incredibly sad at times but mainly because it’s very realistic in its portrayal of loneliness and loss. For probably the first 10 chapters I kept thinking, “what in the world am I reading?!? Why have so many people made such a fuss over this book??” But I’m so glad I kept reading the finished it. SO so good. Loved it
Great book
One of the best books I have ever listened to...Cathleen, the reader of this audiobook, made Eleanor's complex life come to life. And Gail Honeyman has my respect for being a gifted author! Eleanor Oliphant is a survivor I will never forget. And I will also never forget Eleanor Oliphant because she is, more than she has ever understood, a very very likable person! Thank you Gail Honeyman, for taking the time to write this important and touching book!
I’ve had this book since it was first released . It is one of my all time favorite books. I love the entire story. It’s funny , smart ,sad and totally engrossing. I’ve gone back to this book many times .
I loved Eleanor so much. I wanted to reach through to book and hug her, specially when she discussed how little positive physical touch she had received over the years.
This book starts a little slow, but gradually opens to give you glimpses of the depth of the issues. The end is a little predictable. Still its the ending you want and hope for. It made me want to read other books by this author.
I utterly adored this sweet book. The narrator was fabulous and I will search for other books she narrates. The story is sad and sweet all at the same time. I found myself routing for Eleanor more and more through out the story.
I enjoyed this book. Yes, it started a bit slow, but the story was so well written so I didn't mind. The narrator did an excellent job.
Looked forward to listening to this book every day and will miss Eleanor! The author was perfect.
I see Emily Blunt and Chris O’Dowd as the main characters in this movie. I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I kept seeing it on the best sellers list so I decided to jump in and see what it was all about. I’m so glad that I did. I empathized with Eleanor as soon as I met her. Her insecurities and foibles were very relatable, as were her though processes. We’ve all sounded like her at one time or another. As the story progresses and we learn more about her, she is endearing as she perseveres while struggling to make sense of it all. This story really touched me and shows that we are all human with different life experiences. What we make of them says a lot about who we really are. Excellent book!
I wasn’t sure at the beginning, but really enjoyed this book and quirky Eleanor!
Slow start but an enjoyable read!
Great read! After it picked up I didn’t want it to end!
Fantastic! I will miss Eleanor and Raymond.
This was very well written although a difficult subject. I thought the narration was excellent after I adjusted to the dialect. I wish there were more Raymonds in the world.
Wonderful. The characters are well written. The writing and narration is set at a perfect pace to tell such a winding story. Eleanor’s tortured soul is poetic, so the story stays gripping. The narrator is fantastic.
Love this book.
Easily the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. Made me laugh out loud and dropped my jaw. Cleverly written.
Lovely story. Excellent narrator.
A wonderful narrator and endearing characters!
Wonder narrator! I loved her voice and she really brought the humor to the forefront. I haven’t enjoyed a book this much since “The Help”. I didn’t want it to end. Eleanor is an endearing character, as is Raymond. I wish there was a sequel!
The best. Listened twice and will no doubt go back for a third!!
Excellent narration. A little dark although I laughed at many of Elenor’s observations which certainly lightened the underlying storyline.
Took me a while to get into this book but I’m glad I saw it through. Great story and I’m excited they are making it into a movie!
it was a slow start I agree but a lovely story showing how people need each other.
I downloaded this book because it seemed interesting but little did I know it would become a favorite. The tone of the book flows well. Believe it or not I have heard this book over 10x and each time I learn something new that was missed before. The character development was interesting and book was entertaining. Well written!
Enjoyed the complexity of the character development in each of the characters...beautifully written. Broke my heart in places, made my heart swell in others.
Loved getting to know Eleanor! Great listen.
Very, very slow start. Almost gave up several times. Story was so-so. Wanted more from the ending. Can’t imagine this making it to the big screen - especially with Reese Witherspoon. Narration was a bit annoying. Looking forward to a book with no British accents.
Great story and a fantastic narrator, as a Brit I was very impressed with the genuineness of the accents - quite a feat.
So caught off guard by this book. Started out witty and quirky, turned into emotional and thought-provoking. Loved the narration and detail in this story!
Loved the characters in this book. I thought the narrator was excellent!
Loved the characters and storyline. I felt like i ciuld identify with the main character
Pretty funny from the start, however, ended with a big huge "wow".
I enjoyed getting to know Eleanor, and I thought the narrator was exceptional!
First time audiobook listener and found it thoroughly entertaining. The narrators British accent truly enhanced the characters and their life experiences for me. Will definitely use AudioBooks again! Just wish I could stop saying "cheeky."
I enjoyed this read. It seems a bit odd and slow at times but ends surprisingly.
The narrator brought the characters to life with her proper accent, tone and interpretation to a story that had many nuances ranging from deep sadness to light humor. I really enjoyed and recommend it.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Cathleen McCarron, was fabulous! 5 stars! The storytelling was compelling and the characters well drawn. I laughed, felt teary, got chills, and was often on the edge of my (car) seat in anticipation of what was going to be revealed next. 5 stars. Somehow though, there were parts of the story and of the characters that didn’t quite ring true. I heard myself saying, “Really?” even though I “really” fought feeling that way. 3 stars. All and all a very enjoyable and worthwhile listen. 4 stars.
My favorite book in a long time. Such a wonderful, moving story about putting the beautiful pieces of a broken life back together. Amazing characters and outstanding narration.
Loved this book so much! Such amazing narration, wonderful story! Eleanor is simply delightful.
LOVED this book. Great read. Very interesting and made me want to get in my car to drive somewhere, just to get back into the characters and their story!
I enjoyed the main character’s development throughout the book. The story was realistic and the characters, flawed though they were, were charming.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I felt connected to the main character and loved the narrator.
I loved this story. Eleanor is so quirky she is amazing. I didn't want the story to end. I also think the narrator was amazing. Loved hearing the accent and I learned a wee bit about Scotland too.
I absolutely loved this book and couldn't wait to get to my long traffic commute... can't believe I'm saying that! The narrator was so great at all the voices that I never had a problem distinguishing one from the other. The book was fabulous. Thank you!
I hated when the book was over. I looked forward to E every day. The story was wonderful, sad, and enlightening. It was also funny at times. It’s very difficult for me to understand the narrator. The accent made it difficult for me so I found myself replaying parts. Unfortunately, I didn’t always understand even after a few replays.
This book is wonderful and it comes to life with the narrators voice and accent. A wonderful experience!
This is one of the very best audiobooks I have ever listened to. The story and the reader were amazing. If there were 100 stars, I would rate the whole hundred!
I generally find the better the book, the more I think about it after it is over. I thought about this book and it's characters for a week. It is slow to start , but once I was hooked I fell in love with the characters
Loved this book! I cannot wait for her next release!
Loved this book and sorry it is over! The reader was amazing too.
It took a minute to get into this book, but I shortly became obsessed. It's a smart, humorous, read.
Narrator was great!
Loved this story. Started off a little slow, but just keep listening and you find yourself understanding Eleanor's quirky personality and cheering her on. Definitely recommend!
Loved the narration and the story! I love the eloquent way in which Eleanor spoke - I've been imitating her for days! If I could add another chapter, Eleanor and Raymond would fall in love and get married and she would not try to change him but rather except his habits that she was dis-pleased with as part of the man she loved, and perhaps they would have a baby girl and name her Mary Ann!
I didn't love this book as much as I was hoping to. It was just "ok". The narrator was fantastic though
Wonderful book I am sad it is over. You really feel like you know the characters.
It was a very enjoyable book to listen to. The narrator did an incredible job at portraying the characters and keeping the emotions rolling. I highly recommend it
Eleanor's authenticity and naivety is absolutely endearing. The author portrays someone that we care about until the very end. Great reading.
