The story is really slow and plodding and very simple. I can only hope the next book is better. If it were narrated properly it might be better but this guy sounds like he's reading to children. Not at all satisfying, but gave me just enough to get me to try the next book. Hope it's better.

It is a nice mix of fantasy and middle ages with a nice pace in story as well as character development

Promising start of the series A slower paced buildup and introduction to the world & magic system The point of view of not just one protagonist but a strong family of 3 had me really intrigued

Absolutely love the story couldn’t leave it be now will be obsessed with the next chapter especially with Leo.

Over all I enjoyed the story. You understand the struggles of the characters and learn things about the world. The relationship between the two brothers and the father is very enjoyable as well. I do have issues though. Almost the entire book feels like set up. The "call to adventure" only happens in the last two hours of the book. I guess I'm just used to story's we're the action starts at least in the first 2-3 hours of the book. The magic that is in this story that has been shown so far seems to be limited to summoning monsters from another world and something called linking. Linking being if objects that are similar are effected by this worlds magic they start to effect one another. like if you pick up one object the other starts to float. It's said there is more to this magic but was not show in this book. I hope the next book gets into the magic system more.

It does have a slow start but it's necessary to build the world. Just finished book two and can't say enough good things about this series!

it started off a little slow but picked up! I'm already in the second book and will probably be through the 3rd by next Friday. Simon Vance is an awesome narrator. I wish the terms within the book were available on the internet so I can further engulf into the lore.
