Summary
Bram Stoker did not invent the vampire story, but he popularized it with his classic 1897 novel. In form Dracula is an epistolary novel, told through a series of journal entries, letters, newspaper articles, and telegrams. It begins with lawyer Jonathan Harker's perilous journey to Castle Dracula in Transylvania, and chronicles the vampire's invasion of England, where he preys upon the lovely Lucy Westenra and Harker's fiancee, Mina. Harker and Mina join forces with lunatic asylum proprieter Dr. Seward, Lucy's fiance Arthur Holmwood, Texas man of action Quincey Morris, and Dutch vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing to try and defeat their powerful adversary.

Always loved this novel. The narrators were all excellent except MB who read Harker's journal. That voice was annoying. Bad accent mispronouncing words.

Excellent book but one of the narrators has a heavy accent

I always wanted to listen to this book but the narration made it hard. It definitely got better as we got farther in but the nasal narration made it tough going for awhile.

Awesome book loved all readers except MB but overall really good

Great book!! I listen to my books while commuting (I have a three hour commute each day) and couldn't wait to get into my car and turn on my book!! I even enjoyed the different narrators - they made it even more interesting!

This is a literary classic however I may be anal but the narrators voice was like nails on a chalkboard

I cannot convey how much I thoroughly enjoyed Bram Stoker’s novel! With brilliant narration, this book is the perfect item of literature! I profoundly loved the narration of ‘dr.sewards diary’, and every instant I heard this to be the next narration, I knew I would simply love this next scene; with the perfect demonstration upon the character of Renfield throughout his diary entries.

I would rate this higher but for the reader “MB” whose nasal whine was enough that I nearly stopped at chapter 4 but friends persuaded me to continue. Thankfully not much beyond that point the story shifts away from Jonathan Harker and we have a long break before we hear that whine again. The others are good readers, particularly the part of Dr Seward.

One of the narrators really ruined this read for me. Dennis Sayer... WOW.... This guy can barely read. I'm not even worried about some of the background noise. This book was free. Even so, I have to warn people. He reads as if there is no punctuation.

This is one of my all-time favourite books, I have it in three different editions; Original diction, modern diction and norwegian translation. They should really redo some of the narration in this audioversion. For the most part, the cast reads pretty well, except for MB, who reads Jonathan Harker, who has bad pacing, bad pronunciation and some times really bad interpretation of the emotions in the story. They should also redo the entire audio due to shite audio, bad microphones and lots of background noise. Make it a studiorecording, instead of something that sounds like a few people has read through their home-computers with bad headphone mics.

This book i think you will enjoy or you will stop listening there will be no inbetween, being a Dracula tragic even though long winded i did very much enjoy this version.

Extraordinary. I loved all the narration. All the voices made it very exciting. Great job all! At first MB was a little hard but as the book progressed I felt the voice suited the character and liked all the narration.

Like the book but the narrator sounded like he had a stuffed nose.... annoying.

Enjoyed most of the narrators, however did not enjoy Johnathan Harkers narrator, thankfully he only narrators the first part and the remainder of the book is mostly other people. I liked all the different narrators.

jonathon harkers narrator was not to my liking, but overall a great book.

Overall very good. Slow at some parts but that is typical of the period of writing. Didn't care for the narrator that did Johnathon and there was another that had a very thick accent that I missed most of what he said. The rest did a great job!

Not an easy listen. Very slow plot.

Story was good but the narratorr was the worst, thank goodness there were other ones to make up for it but I eventually had to turn it off- he had no change in tone, and his voice was too high pitched for my taste.

To slow and readers are terrible . There's not enough action for what I consider Dracula to have had. The readers were terrible.

I enjoyed this book. Most of the narrators were very good except perhaps one of them who had a heavy accent and was somewhat difficult to understand. It kept me interested and I looked forward to listening to it!

At times it got a little long-winded and repetitive. But there were other parts of the story that were very exciting and moved along. Some of the accents were difficult to understand and at times the narration was to fast. I love the beginning of the story and was very disappointed with the end. It seemed like the author Got tired and just wanted to in the book. I was expecting a little more dramatic ending.

I always wanted to read this book but am glad I heard this instead for it is a long book how ever it’s very good .

Loved it the details where very good it’s amazing how much more a book can be than a movie

I had read the story before so I knew it would be good. The different readers each added their own dimension to the story line. Which I liked. What I really didn't like was all the wasted time between chapters. This is my first Librivox audio book so I wasn't expecting all the delay. The delays st times ruined the pace of the story. I most likely wouldn't read another Librivox book because of that

Very well read

The narration was fine. Relax, listen with an open mind, and the readers with an accent are easy to follow.

Profile Avatar

Please ensure the readers actually learn to pronounce the names of the main characters and places. It is painful to hear .

A good listen. Don’t care for the voice of MB. Good use of grammar. Would recommend.

It's a classic. Brilliant writing. Narrators were good except MB sounded like there was something in his mouth as he read.

Too high pitch voice on one of the narrators, others were low. Would have liked one narrator.

There are two narrators that are good but the rest are terrible and I couldn’t finish the title because I couldn’t continue to listen to them

Classic story read by a great cast made it so interesting

The whole book was read like listening to notes or a diary, not in real time. So that made it unscary for me.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book on my second attempt to listen. Most of the narrators were excellent and I think the initial narrator’s voice was the reason why I was unable to “get into it” on my first attempt at listening. A truly great story - way ahead of its time, and the foundation of all vampire stories!

I'm only on chapter two but I cannot stand MB's voice. incredibly annoying, can't wait until anyone else starts reading .. please,mb whoever you are, find a new career path, your voice is extremely irritating

Profile Avatar

This was not what I was expecting. It was very hard to follow with all the different narrators. MB was hard to interpret at times. You must have to really be able to focus good with this book because it jumps all over the place with all these journal entries from one persons journal to the next person‘s journal I was lost. Even at the very end, I still don’t even know what happened exactly I’m sorry but I don’t see how this is a classic. I was completely lost the whole time.

At first it was a bit slow but I hate giving in. I'm so glad I continued as I really enjoyed it. The different narrators were excellent as it was like listening to a film with the different characters. I actually hated it when it finished. Very good.

A classic novel that inspired who-knows how many others. The narrator's were alright, not perfect but I cannot complain.

MB is a lil much at first. But reads well. I just invisioned Jonathan as a bit of a dandey and got through it. Great book wouldn't change a thing 3 out 5 stars.

Amazing writing, I wish the voice was more theatrical but I’m sure that because of the intense nature of the movies. Great Audio option !

I only regret not reading this earlier. If you like any vampire tale, this is foundational. The readers were great for the most part. Some of the accents didn’t make sense for the characters but they were read well for what it was. The story is long but comes full circle in a way that if you get a quarter way, it’s worth the full journey. Pro tip - Consider speeding it to 1.3x if it seems to drag.

I like it.

I believe it’s our duty to write reviews on the book as we listen and so I would say that this is a very nice book and I’ve enjoyed it. Almost all the narrators were good except a few but overall it’s a good listen.

The second the narrator even said her name I was done. Her voice is so outrageous I can’t get into the sorry

Profile Avatar

This is an absolutely horrible book. Some of the readers are painful to listen to and hard to understand. The book itself, is painfully slow.

Profile Avatar

I thought the narration was fine. It's a full cast! Fantastic quality given it's free content put out by volunteers. The story is definitely dated and a bit hard to digest as a modern reader, but it's still entertaining and worth a read. It must have been astoundingly unusual at the time that it was first published.

I was surprised to find that Bram stoker had written more that this story. he is a great writer and I enjoyed the story and most of the narration.

Profile Avatar

I don’t know how Dennis Sayer ever got a job as a narrator… but he destroyed the experience for me. Loved the writing, enjoyed everything else… could not suffer Mr Sayer though… just… couldn’t… do… it

Profile Avatar
Walter McCartney

I found the love and friendship between the main characters to be very touching. Somehow I doubt if such friendships would be believable in our so politically correct world of today. Besides being a good book it is time travel at it's best.
