Summary
View our feature on John Barnes's Directive 51. The first book in a new post-apocalyptic trilogy from 'a master of the genre'

Heather O'Grainne is the Assistant Secretary in the Office of Future Threat Assessment, investigating rumors surrounding something called 'Daybreak.' The group is diverse and radical, and its members have only one thing in common-their hatred for the 'Big System' and their desire to take it down.

Now, seemingly random events simultaneously occurring around the world are in fact connected as part of Daybreak's plan to destroy modern civilization-a plan that will eliminate America's top government personnel, leaving the nation no choice but to implement its emergency contingency program...Directive 51.

I have a better title for this book. I would call it "DOES THIS STORY HAVE A POINT AND IF SO WOULD IT FLIPPING GET TO IT"?????? I listened for 6 discs and then my ears began to bleed and my will to live rapidly started to fade. There were so many stories within the story and almost none of them were interesting - this book is hard to follow and hard to want to follow. I tried to soldier through thinking that eventually we'd get to the actual point/plot but it did not happen. As far as I'm concerned if it can't catch and hold my attention after 6 discs then I'm out. Life is short, books are many and this story is apparently a never-ending million word blather about ..... I give up. I still don't know.

All in all a good book. The story is a little drawn out, if abridged it would be better. There most definitely is a good story line and while there are stories of the characters within the story...any intelligent person should have no trouble following it.
