Summary
A “perfectly executed suspense tale very much in the mode of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca” (The Washington Post) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Turn of the Key.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is a “captivating and eerie page-turner” (The Wall Street Journal) from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Creative plot, however the writing was so verbose that it took away from the story. Also, the motive for the killings was weak, and not realistic. Overall, very entertaining; but as written, this would make for a better movie.

This book was excellent, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I could not wait to get back to it and missed it when it ended. The narrator did a fantastic job as well.

So good, it might be my favorite. No I can’t choose like that, Ruth Ware is amazing, I luv all her books. I found all her stories easy to follow, with Imogene narrating I’m biting my nails all the way through. Ruth does leave some untied knots for our own imagination to contemplate I guess that is why I can’t wait for her next novel to come out and I can try to untie that mystery chapter by chapter.

This was my first Ruth Ware book and while I thought the story was good, I thought it was very slow moving and I found myself skipping parts of it! However, the narrator was superb!

First, the narrator is superb in this book. Does not get any better. The book itself was a great read. Kept me guessing and while some of it was predictable, there was a twist I didn’t see coming. I recommend it!

A fantastic story. I enjoyed every moment of this book. The story was good , the characters were good, I’m not sure I buy the reasoning behind the murders but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the storyline

Wonderful listen! I couldn’t get enough and the ending was a surprise. Imogene Church is fantastic

I bought this because it said it was a thriller/horror but the first 11 hours are steady character development with very little in the way of thrills or intrigue; and it’s definitely not horror. It’s not BAD, it’s just slow and not very thrilling until the last 3 hours. By the time the mystery begins to unravel, it’s pretty fast paced and exciting but it’s over before I got my fill and it left me wanting more for my investment of time. The narrator is excellent. 3 stars seems fair for the book and the narrator earned all five stars.

This read is by far one of my favorite reads. It kept me guessing from start till finish. I enjoyed the characters and the fact that the narrator did a splendid job with their voices. This read was indeed suspenseful and thrilling for me. Recommended read!!!

I am enjoying this author so much. I like the detailed characterizations, and I think the narrator contributes to how effective they are. There are always unexpected events in Ruth Ware’s books, and this one is no exception. I appreciate the surprises and I also appreciate her endings. Never what I think it’s going to be.

Well written, with an engaging narrator.

Profile Avatar Gail R. Feb 2019

This writer needs a new editor. If it weren’ for the outstanding narrator, I would have dropped this after the first four chapters. Eventually, the book picks up and the ending was interesting. I don’t think I will elect to listen to another book by this author.

A great who done it. Kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning. My second Ruth Ware novel.. Loved the narration. Imogene Church is incredible. Some narrators have difficulty transitioning to various people. She did a spot on job. I highly recommend it for your next bookclub.

This book had a very unique flavor. It kept me interested and surprised and I did not predict the outcomes. This is more of a psychological thriller so if you like in your face horror/gore and non-stop action this is not for you. if you like something that builds with steady intrigue and twists this is a perfect read. I would kind of compare the style to Liane Moriarty. the narration is superb!!!

Profile Avatar Melissa M. Sep 2018

In contrary to the other reviewers I could tell the ending of this book and I found it to be a tad boring. Not very thrilling and the word trepidation is said many times.

Profile Avatar Carrie D. Sep 2018

This book was a thriller until the end. I normally can guess the end. But it was a surprise and gripping until the end . A few parts were slow. But still a great vacation read

Profile Avatar Jane T. Aug 2018
