Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BOOK BEHIND THE FIFTH SEASON OF THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES

NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST FANTASY BOOKS OF THE DECADE

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his landmark series—as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK FIVE

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever.

Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.

Praise for A Dance with Dragons

“Filled with vividly rendered set pieces, unexpected turnings, assorted cliffhangers and moments of appalling cruelty, A Dance with Dragons is epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined.”—The Washington Post

“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Haters gonna hate. George R. R. Martin is a god.

Epic book, a great addition to this wonderful true to life, yet also fantasy series. This is how medieval times (knights, lords, kings) actually were, only this story adds dragons, white walkers, and many other mystical and wonderfully dangerous i things. Go to those other stories of heroes if you yearn for childish stories, this ones for mature adults.

George is a Genius. The story/world he has created is simply incredible. I feel like I have to continually re-read all 5 current books, that's how far I have delved into his story. To me they're more than books. I'm anxiously awaiting for George to finish "The Winds of Winter", but till then I will continue to re-listen to the 5 current books and keep picking up little details that help me understand the story better. everytime I go through them, I find something I didn't catch the previous time or I start putting together certain details that help me predict what is gonna happen in TWOW. I'm just super grateful to George for creating this masterpiece.

Infinitely better than season 5 of the show. It leaves you wanting to write letters telling GRRM to HURRY UP AND RELEASE THE WINDS OF WINTER!!!

Profile Avatar Kathrina Sharman Jun 2016

this is indeed long and takes some patience to learn and keep up with all the stories and characters. but once you do, the immersionexperience is well worth it. I've love listening to all of the books and can barely wait for the last. the narratoris also incredible gifted!

It was only the first half. Maybe just (dreams and dust) and not (after the feast). Either way the book ended but the story didn't. I can't find the rest of it. I don't know what's going on but audio books seems to not have the entire series of (a song of ice and Fire). (A Storm of swords) was the same way. A two-part book or two book where only the first half is in audiobooks. As far as the narrator. Name pronunciations and voices used changes after the first book. His voice is very rough and fits some of the characters but even 5 year old little girls sound like a bar wench that's been gargling acidic glass and smoking cigarettes for 35 years lol other than that he was good. Just sometimes the voices throw me off.

it feels like im listening to a long list of names and places, with horrible accents.

Sloppy and unsatisfactory with no next book in sight. I recommend stopping at "Feast for Crows".

What can I possibly say that hasn't been said already? The entire series of books is amazing and Ray Dotrice's narration brings the characters to life in a way that makes you forget that it's only one dude that's reading the text. My only gripe is that George R. R. Martin seriously needs to get off his butt and write the next book. My hope is that he has only been waiting because he doesn't want to reveal anything that's happening in the TV series. I highly recommend these books to people who love these characters and stories, there's so much insight into who they are and their motives, I just love it.

Great book, but where in Gods name is the Winds Of Winter?

I think all this books could be listened to over one over , the more you listen the more you’ll pick out stuff you didn’t the previous times , love them

Great. Just really great!

I can't imagine why any fantasy fan would enjoy this book. If your reading this you probably fit into one of two catagories. If you liked all prevoius books from the series you will likely enjoy this one. If you're in the group of us whom liked the first book and have found the following books to get progressively worse, I must inform you this one continues the trend. I will probably finish the rest of the series just because i dont know how to quit, but I've been soured by the authers lack of ability to give fantasy readers what they want. I get what he's trying to do, but this book reads like a transcribed episode of a bad reality tv show.

I have to agree about all the characters made up out of the blue. Sometimes I couldn't remember if it was someone I'd met previously or not. Love his imagination, not a big fan of the worst vulgar words but interesting if you can get past those two things.

Profile Avatar John McCrave Apr 2015

Epic book. Continues Martin's tradition of providing strong fantasy for adults. Narrator does a great job too. Also Kirk, I hope you realize there are 4 books that come before this one, each about a thousand pages. Maybe you would understand more if you had read or listened to them. Can't imagine how one could possibly listen to this without knowing that.

so much has happened in this book that we need answers to! I truly hope this isn't the end of the series and we manage to hear winds and dream!!

Profile Avatar Trevor B. Feb 2024

I have see. The show, read the books and listen to the audio books more then once. Highly recommend. Now I just need a video game and full cast audio book.

Profile Avatar Garrick Jan 2024

The narrator changed his tone of voice of certain characters from previous books he’s read. It was a bit annoying. To bad the Author will never finish the series and has gotta En fat on the earnings of the other books. Total jerk not to finish the series!!

The winds of winter cannot come soon enough!!!

Profile Avatar Naomi Gontko Jan 2020

great book!!!

Profile Avatar Amanda M. Jul 2019

The continuing saga of the families Stark, Lannister, etc. is an interesting web of treachery and truth seeking. However, the story strayed from the major characters to some seemingly minor ones a bit too much for me to rate it higher.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2019

I love this book! The narrator is all over the place with character voices which makes it kind of hard to follow.

Profile Avatar Stephen C. Dec 2018

The content is a masterpiece. Martin weaves a tapestry of words and character interplay that leaves me clamoring for more. With regard to Roy’s narration, I could never get past the way familiar character’s voices changed from one volume to the next. By the end of DwD, I could swear that Danny belonged on the side of a Lucky Charms box, not riding Drogon. All the Lannister’s sound the same. Etc... Something I enjoyed, that was very much unanticipated, was that my favorite characters from the HBO series did not end up being my favorite characters in the books.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Feb 2018

As always great book! I came to know of the book series because of the HBO show. As usual the characters are what drive everything. If you are up to date with the show, take the time to listen to the books.

Profile Avatar Parker W Sep 2017

Watched the tv series first but finally caught up with books it’s interesting the differences Narrator is great

Profile Avatar Alexander A Aug 2017

Epic book series. Bad narrator... Roy changed the voices he used for the characters in this novel twice! There are also large gaps of silence between sentences.

Profile Avatar jennifer fay Jan 2017

The Game of Thrones series is amazing and number one. George R.R. Martin is a true genius and nothing compares.

Profile Avatar Jack Kayrouz Nov 2016

I love it. Listened to this and Feast for Crows on my way to work every day. Takes some getting used to at first, and some of his accents for some characters seem a bit off, but great job nonetheless. 4.5/5

Profile Avatar Andrew Emley Jun 2016

This book is amazing. Very hard book to put down. Can't wait for the sixth book!

Profile Avatar Alan Bernier Mar 2016

Captivating and wrought with plot twists. An amazing journey can't wait to see the conclusion. I enjoyed the narrator except for the female characters was very distracting

Profile Avatar Jordan Perkins Jan 2016

Amazing book and an amazing series. Beautifully narrated and recommend to absolutely anyone. Five stars without hesitation or question. Everyone and anyone should read this book and the entire series.

Profile Avatar Rick Tucker Dec 2015

Amazing book! There were a few skips in the audio, but it may have been the download or something.

Profile Avatar Caroline mahoney Oct 2015

Epic read, loved the twists and mysteries. Had to read twice to really pick up on everything, can't wait for the rest of the series
