This is an amazing book a great story and the narrator is one of the most amazing and entertaining I have ever heard
Dumas' classic tale of revenge & retribution has spawned many adaptations, so the unabridged original is great to go back to.
This narration is as good as any I have heard of any book. I lost count of the voices he employed; it may be as many as 30, all of which fit the character portrayed like a glove. In other words, this is a professional-grade rendition and so a great treat.
I can say this with confidence as I previously read the unabridged version, and viewed the movie adaptations with Richard Chamberlain from 1977 and more recently, Jim Cavizel. Both highly recommended.
Wow, just brilliant. The book was amazing as was the narrator. His accents were spot on. Although it was nearly 60 hours long I would definitely listen to it again.
Absolutely top notch. This is one of the best stories I have ever read; I don't know how I haven't heard if it before. And the reader was spectacular. I am surprised an audiobook of this quality and length is free to listen to.
What a great story! Narrator was spectacular. Loved it!
It is quite an entertaining book, narrated by a gifted gentleman.
It took a bit of time to settle into the story. There are a lot of characters to get used to. Clarke’s narration is excellent. This was on my summer reading list for my freshman year at college it only took me 50 years to get to it. Glad I finally did..
Narrator was amazing!
One of my favorites! Narrator was espectacular
I completely agree with David P’s review below. Exemplary and versatile narration (actually mind boggling) and a rousing story of patient and calculated revenge. I loved it, the perfect long journey sort of book!!
My favorite book of all time. love the story and great narration.
I enjoyed listening to this and if you miss a part its easy to pick /keep up
Can't recommend this enough! great story excellent narration. Actually had me in floods of tears at one point. Am very greatful to the narrator for undertaking this epic title. and making it more accessible to a dyslexic like me. (would have taken me years to read it by myself)
I enjoyed listening to the book but it’s very long and there were times i kept confusing the names and who was who and the places.Good book nevertheless.
This is my first time reading the Count of Monte Cristo all the way through! It is such a great book and adventure! The Narrator was really great and I would highly recommend listening to this version of the book.
good story and very well narrated
Majestic book, and superb narration. Well worth listening from start to end.
the narrator was absolutely fantastic, probably the most fitting for this book. although it's a long one, it's worth the listen. or at least of the first third. the 2nd third was a little slow, and then ending was definitely interesting. good book
Beautiful engaging novel, read spectacularly by Mr. David Clarke. I truly wish I could wipe it from my mind, that I might go through the adventure once again.
Legendary book - Arabian nights meets three musketeers meets Agatha Christie… one of the greatest books ever!
And the narrator was PHENOMENAL!! I didn’t think I could love this book more, but I do!! It’s my all time favorite audio book and was already one of my favorite reads!
Honestly I thought it would feel familiar and good to listen to it, but it actually became an entirely new beautiful work of art to me!
The narrator made the story 100 times better
Great book but the narrator is the best!
Story was great, all 54 hours. The Heroines were, sadly, not very independent women but I guess that was a sign of the times when the book was written. The narrator was spectacular, shifting accents, tone, and style with each of the many characters. Thank you to David Clark!
This is the kind of book which makes you involuntary selfish and makes you keep it hidden from others so that they won’t experience the same happiness and joy which you experienced. But here I am blessing the mankind.
Also the narrator is one of the best.
A great story and a wonderful reader
Brilliant story, need to focus as there are many twists in this story - narrator- brilliant - best ever
A great classic novel which the narrator did an excellent job of bringing to life.
Excellent book read by an amazing narrator!
Great story although it does wander sometimes. Glad I’ve finally got through it!
Narrator was good but some of those accents…
Perfect book and best ever narration I've heard
Can’t praise this highly enough. I read this about 20 years ago and loved it but just don’t have the time to devote to reading as much now. I was thrilled to get such an excellent narrator. I just wish he read more books by Dumas!
Enjoyed this book.
The book is very long and has a lot of threads to follow- I admit at times I got confused because a character appeared in a different context than I expected. The story is very interesting and the pace picks up significantly once all the threads start coming together.
The narrator's voice was wonderful. He changes accent and intonation during conversations according to character, which makes them much easier to follow.
Excellent narration and wonderful accents! made this all too fun to follow along with - great story of revenge and the human condition. Would recommend.
Maybe I was spoiled listening to the Ken Follet books narrator who was absolutely amazing, but I just couldn’t get into this guy. Also the audio sounded distant/echoey like he recorded it in his bedroom on an iPhone.
This review is only for the narrator as I didn’t get through the book, so I just dropped in three stars for the book.
One of the most captivating audio books that I have ever listened to. Alexandre Dumas is so adept at setting the scenes, the story plays out in one's mind like a movie. David Clarke adds to the enjoyment with his narration that is second to none. I wish he would do more. Loved it.
I absolutely love this book and nearly bought the audible version until I listened to this one. If you haven’t heard the story, this is a must. If you have, this is a great way to live through this amazing story again. I just wish I could wipe my brain and listen to it again for the first time.
Very good well worth listening to
Fantastic! I was almost scared away at first because I thought the audio quality was not that great, but I could hear well the whole time. In the car it was a little difficult to hear. It is a very engaging book and narrator with a large range who is easy to listen to.
Thank you AudioBooks - so enjoyed the entire book and you released it for free. It did take a while to get use to all the names but once I got my head around them all was good. I am now going on a search for the DVD as I just cant get enough of the history of this magnificent story. This book should be a compulsory read for students - it took teach so much of life, love and resilience.
Loved it! A stormy for all time.
Fabulous story- all 117 chapters. I doubt I would have enjoyed as much had it been read by another- David Clarke’s narration is exceptional.
This is the kind of book 5 star reviews should be saved for. A philosopher, bestowed upon a man who's life carried great influence in history. Has written down a tale of guidance and advices, which through providence have been saved by time to be passed down and may be read by any. Offered freely in today's world and read with a gusto, dedication and determination that honours the writer and the listener alike. Bravo.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this narrated version. I read some 28 years ago on recommendation by Richard Lester who got me off my reading the Russian and exsitential literature, onto these french classics. Having said this, the sociological, psychological, political, and beleive it or not technological insights in this book are absolutely fascinating. First case of hacking. I mean the windmill scene is a laugh. Change the message between Marseille and Paris between the windmillers, and lose a persons fortune upon false information
Did not keep me interested
Classic French novel read by by an amazing narrator who did a great job varying his voice ito represent the characters
Truly great book with so much emotion. Even with it being 54 hours long, I was sad when it was over. The Narrator was awesome... he made it come alive.
David Clarke, responsible for this masterpiece has also launched his own podcast for classic audibooks at https://anchor.fm/david-clarke85. He has just kicked off a serialization of The Phantom of the Opera. Highly recommended
Enjoyed it very much especially the narrator
Great narrator. A classic worth spending 50 hours listening
This is an amazing book. The range of emotions I experienced were great. I literally cried at several points. I can see why this is a classic. It should be read by more people. The narrator was perfect for this story. Very well read.
Great book, if a little drawn out. Excellent narration.
Wonderful experience. Another book I would listen to again.
Absolutely fabulous! Great story and a magnificent narrator. I could listen to him forever!
Fantastic. I can’t believe this super-talented narrator read this super-long, amazing book for free.
This narrator is fantastic. A book I knew about but never read. This recording was well worth listening to
I had never read this classic literature in school so I decided to read through the 100 great pieces. This did not disappoint. Some free books have ridiculous narrators. This one was fantastic. Worth your time definitely
Great story tell. Good narration.
Throughly enjoyed this reading.
would listen to again for sure.
Excellent Narration of the complex and intriguing story. Audio quality is unfortunately inconsistent and sometimes too low
This is an EPIC story! Here it has been read with such skill and attention to detail. My absolute favourite so far. Absolutely beautiful
Thank you Alexandre Dumas! Thank you David Clarke!!!!
Great book and awesome narrator!!
It’s a long listen but a worthwhile and engaging story. There was one narrator and he was very good. I would recommend this audiobook.
so very very long, thankfully the narration was great.
loved reading this as a kid, loved hear it as an adult
My favorite book of all. I have read it abridged and in 4 different unabridged versions. I love them all.
A very good narration of a classic book. The fake french accent needed some getting used to, but once I got over it it became to feel appropriate.
This is such a great book! Long but never dull or difficult to listen too. The reader does an amazing job and is probably one of the best I have heard so far!
Love this book. My husband said there is a movie now I want to watch it. Definitely a book that I would reread
