Summary
A bestselling dystopian novel that tackles surveillance, privacy and the frightening intrusions of technology in our lives—a “compulsively readable parable for the 21st century” (Vanity Fair).

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO.

Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public.

What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

I did not like the characters, I certainly did not like the ending. The narrator was great but I think it should have been a woman reading since the main character was a female.

Great idea...in particular as it forebodes what Facebook is doing as I write. Too many gaps in the story. Still I would recommend it if you have a Facebook account.

Definitely good perspective of how many Millennials way of thinking is, unfortunately. Scary concept but interested in watching the cinema version with Tom Hanks.

Enjoyed the book but I think the narrator should've been a woman reading it.

Excellent narration, like an actor using different voices, accents etc. It kept the book interesting and enjoyable. The story-line is very contemporary and will probably be relevant for the next couple of decades even though many of the details will seem dated in a few years. If you are into tech and excited about what it will bring for the future you will enjoy this book, but if you don't have a Facebook account you will probably be mostly confused and bored. Contrary to some others, I liked the ending. It wasn't a 'happy' ending, per se, but I found it plausible and satisfying. The sexual encounters were a bit annoying, since they felt irrelevant to the general story, but I guess they serve a purpose as a depiction of the characters' humanity. My biggest complaint is that the sound quality was lacking and not up to the standard I am accustomed to.

Did not enjoy the book. The characters were not likable, the story obvious, and the narrative droned on. Would not recommend. Narration was excellent however.

I enjoyed reading this book. The topic is timely. However, the ending was a real letdown. Couldn't believe after all the hours listening there was literally no resolution in the storyline. Is there a sequel in the works? Way too many loose ends for me!

While I too enjoyed the narration and the story sounds like something I will read about in next weeks papers. I really was disappointed in the ending. Probably won't see the movie for that very fact.

I found the characters unlikeable, the story predictable and boring. Read more like a young adult novel. While I think the narrator did a good job, a female should have read the book seeing how the protagonist is a woman. Overall I was disappointed - sorry!

Okay the very ending I hated! Gah! But I understood. I could not put this down and the story has lingered with me as I took breaks from listening. The narrator is excellent, I agree, and the book is very current and really scary! I'm convinced it's already happening :-/ Why does the narrator's rating not show? It should be more transparent :^) JUST KIDDING.

Very interesting book, and the Narrator was excellent, I recommend this for every one.

I was intrigued by the storey....but did not enjoy the end. I dont know if I could recommend to pay for this book...lib rary if you must! but it did make you think....

This book, which chronicles the rise of a young entry-level customer service agent at a Google-type company was a little too close to reality for comfort. A compelling look at how we are all getting sucked into the 'transparent' life in which everyone seems to feel an obligation to share everything, all the time.
