There’s no right way to keep a diary, but if there’s an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have mastered it.

If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party—lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

These diaries remind you that you once really hated George W. Bush, and that not too long ago, Donald Trump was just a harmless laughingstock, at least on French TV. Time marches on, and Sedaris, at his desk or on planes, in hotel dining rooms and odd Japanese inns, records it. The entries here reflect an ever-changing background—new administrations, new restrictions on speech and conduct. What you can say at the start of the book, you can’t by the end. At its best, A Carnival of Snackery is a sort of sampler: the bitter and the sweet. Some entries are just what you wanted. Others you might want to spit discreetly into a napkin.

I have all of David Sedaris' books and CDs and enjoy them all. HOWEVER, the only reason I am knocking this down a notch is because I don't care for his nasty political comments and observations. OK, I get it...you're liberal. Fine. I'm not. But I do love David's essays and stories and if this political diatribe was in one essay, fine, but to go on and on and on. Forget it. As for the narrations by Tracey Ullman, I truly enjoyed that as she was fantastic with all the different voices. I also love the way David Sedaris reads his book...always did. All in all, David Sedaris is one of my favorite authors - just keep the political commentary to a minimum. Thanks.

This audiobook was a pleasant rollercoaster. I laughed out loud, I cried, and I enjoyed every minute, start to finish. Reading the book would have been okay, but the narration here is top notch.

I have read them all. And this one is by far my favorite! Don't get me wrong. I LOVED "Me Talk Pretty, Dress them in Demin, Holiday on Ice and Theft by Finding (honorable mention for Santaland), but he has outdone himself on this one!

I. Loved. This Book. I would've laughed at the actual book, I'm sure, but hearing David Sedaris read his own words is a special treat. And I enjoyed Tracey Ullman's narrations, as well. She did voices! I was told some people didn't care for her additions, but I really liked them. Bye, going to start David's Calypso, which I've somehow managed not to read yet!
