Summary
At the age of twenty-two, Jennifer Worth leaves her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in post war London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she meets while delivering babies all over London-from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lives to the woman with twenty-four children who can’t speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side-illuminate a fascinating time in history. Beautifully written and utterly moving, Call the Midwife will touch the hearts of anyone who is, and everyone who has, a mother.

Nicola Barber's narration made thisbook, interesting and compelling on it's own, come alive. Toward the end, I realized that this is a book I will listen to several times.

I absolutely loved the book. It was a real learning experience for me. I knew about midwifes, but the history behind it was amazing. The details about her life and living in the sisters house, the understanding of the sisters through time, understanding and appreciation for each of their personalities was so enjoyable as well as a learning experience.

This was well narrated and well written. The historical aspect was as interesting as the story of her life itself.

This was a great story. I love learning the historical pieces of modern medicine and the dawn of women’s health. The characters are just fantastic. My only complaint is the narrators’ whispery voice. She may need to pipe in a bit better. I hate having to turn up my volume and rewinding because she thinks she’s telling an 11 hour secret.

Fascinating historical perspective on London's everyday "heroes".

This book brought be back in time of how woman gave birth at home but also the behind the scenes of how the empowerment of midwives were greatly unrecognized.

I just love all the Midwife books that are out there for our reading pleasure and this one didn’t fail in any way at all. It was so heartwarming, enjoyable, and it showed the beauty and joy of new life. It so touched my heart in the middle of London shortly after the Second World War when there were slums and poverty but genuine love for each other also. I hope you all enjoy this book like I did.

wonderfully? rich history and a unique story. my only cons are there are some graphic scenes about prostitution and child neglect. not too long and I skipped some of that. worth the read!

A fine, well-written tale of an obscure part of history, narrated with skill and feeling.

Great book, fascinating, insightful, and touching. Narrator really does the book justice.
