Summary
Springtime in Styria. And that means war.

There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, and behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular -- a shade too popular for her employer's taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

Her allies include Styria's least reliable drunkard, Styria's most treacherous poisoner, a mass-murderer obsessed with numbers and a Northman who just wants to do the right thing. Her enemies number the better half of the nation. And that's all before the most dangerous man in the world is dispatched to hunt her down and finish the job Duke Orso started. . .

Was at 4 stars but then went to 3 at 80% done reading. The only likable character in this is coscar, the rest I couldn’t care less. Monza was really annoying throughout, she tries to be the victim, then gets her revenge whatever necessary hurting those around her, after she feels depress again for hurting those around (mostly shivers, she’s disgusted by him and feels pity for him) and it keeps happening again and again after each kill on her 7 to kill list.

A friend said this is her all time favorite book so I simply had to read it . Ok I downloaded it and had a wonderful narrator read it to me as I drive for a living. It is truly a great story and for a stand alone book fleshes out each character very well. Wonderful pace and story.

Perfect pairing of narrator and writer. The characterized voices are all unique, complete with different accents, tone, and even lisps. The action in this story is unlike anything I've ever read and it's brought to life by Pacey. Detained fight scenes read with the frenzy of the moment. Slow, emphatic narration paired with thought or introspection. It really is brilliant.

i am so glad I found the First Law series. This stand alone is great old friends show up mew ones are made and the violence and treachery are going full tilt. The images J.A. paints with words has you gritting your teeth and wincing for the characters.

Fantastic continuance of the First Law series. Really surprised at the quality of these books. And the narrator captured the spirit perfectly.
