Summary
Award-winning and bestselling author Wallace Stegner takes on the hippy generation in a novel of 'crackling vividness' (New York Times Book Review).

Joe Allston, the retired literary agent in Stegner's National Book Award–winning novelThe Spectator Bird, returns in this disquieting and keenly observed novel. Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has its serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex, and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherwordly innocence is far more appealing—and far more dangerous.

Wow! Stegner is a master of literature. He handles difficult themes in such a soft way. I have to admit that he seems to always start slow, so some patience is needed to get into the story while it sits on a back burner, but then Stegner hits strong and that's his amazing power. Stegner makes me lough with his very unique sense of humor (both this book and Angle of Repose are narrated by ranting old men, and the books are read by great narrators that make it even more beautiful). How do we accept or react when someone completely disagreeable to us comes along? Or someone that we just can't understand? Joe (the old man) meets both Pack, a trouble maker, that preaches for the usage of drugs, yoga, loud music, and also his new neighbor, Marian, who loves all the little live things and believes in true nature, both are not understood to him. I highly recommend the audiobook, narrated by the talented Edward Herrmann, that also narrated Unbroken.
