Unabridged Audiobook
To read this book. Yes, it’s a tome, and it’s formidable in its appearance. But Shirer’s firsthand experience through much of the time of Hitler’s ascendancy and again at Nuremberg for the postwar trials give him insight not to be elsewhere found. Thoroughly researched in captured Nazi documents and the memoirs of the Nazi High Command, this a a must read for every student of 20th century history.
Obviously, this is a long book, but the content is so well documented and for a historical non-fiction book, it reads like a novel. For me the number of German characters and their names were confusing, but eventually they were sorted out. The footnotes and the appendix provide additional content but can be skipped if you are not interested. I was very impressed and learned about a time of world conflict that helped put all the individual facts [and stories] I have collected over the years into a concise and readable timeline.
We’ll researched and easy to read and understand. I have always wondered how Hitler Rose to power and why he did what he did. This book does a great job in explaining what drove him and why he couldn’t stop.
