Summary
In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or 'sleeve') making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats 'existence' as something that can be bought and sold. For Kovacs, the shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning. . . .

'Morgan's debut novel, the first in a series, combines noir mystery with ultra-high tech science to create a complex sf thriller. Featuring a hard-nosed antihero with his own sense of personal honor and ethics, this is highly recommended for sf collections.'-Library Journal

Haunting. Best science fiction I've heard in a long time

I could have done without the graphic sex scene, but the graphic violence is absolutely vital to the story. It helps illustrate the nature of the society and it IS the sign of the times as they are presented in the story. I am truly impressed. The only good CyberPunk story I have ever read was a book called "The Last Dancer" and this borders on CP, but is more of a genre mash-up. Really well done. Can't wait to "read" ;-) Broken Angels...

I am not much of a Sci-fi fan, but this book has a great story line and strong writing

I only heard about this from a friend. I trusted his judgement and listened to it. This was an exceptionally well-written story with likeable characters and a futuristic twist. Although there is an aspect of science fiction in the book, it is easily believable and does not detract from the story and the message of ethics issues it presents.

This took a while to get through, but it was interesting. Not for a young audience - sex is graphic. Worth spending the time.

I really enjoyed it. This book is meant to be made into a series. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the trilogy.

Story starts okay but seems directionless most of the time. Characters are stereotypical action figures and one dimensional.  I didn't feel for or care about what happened to them.  Many of the characters have original Japanese or Hispanic names, but author provides no cultural significance or subtleties about them, so they could just as well be named Dick and Jane. The book is way too long and I only felt relief when it ended.

Story is okay, worth the listen. And the narrator is fine. But you can hear every audio edit; every stop and start so much that after a hour or so of listening that I'm listening for the abrupt clicks and bumps instead of the story. Someone needs to learn about cross fades...rookie mistake.

Pretty lame. I'm surprised Netflix made this into a show.

As good and in many ways better than Gibson. i enjoyed the in-depth personal dialogue. The action was in many ways better than what I've come to expect these years from Gibson. I look forward to reading more stories by Morgan. It's really puzzling to me as to why I have't heard of the author until now -- especially since this book was written in 2005. A great listen.

The concept is fascinating. At first, the author paints a suitably grimy picture of the future. But then the gratuitous violence begins. . .and it never stops getting worse. With the subtlety of a metronome, the author seems almost driven to make each gory, wildly graphic picture of purely unnecessary violence worse than the last. It is by turns repellent, repulsive, disgusting, and finally obscene. The only thing we can hope is that we are not sinking so low as to make this wildly improbably and stomach turning tale a precursor of things to come.

The beginning of this story was a bit confusing but that is tpical of SciFi. It held my interest for about 4 CDs and then I just wanted it to end. I didn't even finish it I got so bored.

If you like violence, drug enhanced sex and torture all in a surreal future, this book is for you. I gave up after the first five CD's. The writing is capable, and the author's vision of a possible future is fascinating. Based on the half I listened to, the plot (a varient of the classic murder in a room locked from the inside) seemed a bit thin, but likely to thicken. I would like to see the same future vision explored in a less violent way.

Future life is very complex! Had a hard time keeping everything about our fantasy future straight, but found the story line really interesting. Can't wait to see the movie! The special effects will have to be amazing.
